  • Unlocking DVD-RW drive speed ?

i recently heard theres programs that can do this but i dont have a clue what to look for and if somebody could point me in the right direction that would be dope

    Well,

Let's start at square one, what kind of burner is it?

In order to 'unlock', you need firmware to do it, which means you're going to have to flash your DVD-RW drive.

The problem is that there's not always firmware readily available to unlock your drive speed.

Secondly, I wouldn't recommend going faster than your drive's MAX speed anyways because it'll be unstable and prone to more errors during burning.

Heck, I don't even recommend burning at full speed anyways.

    Just my $0.02.
    change must come from within

But in some cases DVD drives are speed-locked so READING from a DVD will be limited by the firmware, and sometimes upgrading to newer/modified firmware will let you rip DVDs at full speed. Anyways, find out your model number and check out this site:

Just as a FYI, I have a modified firmware for my NEC drive and it's improved the quality of my burns a lot. One plus is that you can automatically set a DVD movie's booktype to DVD-ROM for greater compatibility.

I actually had the exact same drive, and there is a firmware that turns your 411s into a 811s.

thats good then, it'll be alot easier to talk about something we both have/had, Could you possibly tell me the plus side of upgrading it, Some people said speed was better however, they said it wasnt the best due to a few coasters being made from it, if you want a 8x burner, buy one..

least thats what i heard, so i would be greatful on your $2.. plus, ripping dvds is something i do on the hard drive, not the dvdrw drive, i rip to the hard drive so i can save my dvdrw going through a few hours of spinning the cd/dvd around..

i have an NEC that i unlocked as well, but it served no real purpose and it voids the warranty. people think burning faster is better but it's really not. if you burn too fast, your drive can miss blocks of data and this makes the burn unstable. it's not as accurate.

i know somebody who can burn a dvdr in around 10min, it takes me around 1hour on average and that's whilst i'm not using the computer for anything more than that...

the dvd burner i have for my pc burns them really quick. i only use it for certain things. the SuperDrive in my Mac takes longer though because it's an older system. the Mac is 1000mhz and the PC is 2400mhz. i burn a lot on the mac though because i can still use all of my programs with no problem.

When I burn my DVD movies, I only burn at 4x, as that seems to give the best quality/speed of any other. 4x only takes about 14 mins for me, so that's not too bad. Burning at higher speeds will result in a less accurate burn, and depending upon the media you burn on, could result in coasters. I don't remember exactly, but I think when I upgraded the drive I did get 8x burning enabled, but I didn't use it that much. I think you also get better media compatibility as well, so you should be able to burn faster on more media.

do i just install nero and add a name & serial and im done to burn dvdrs and cds?

i know how to use the program, but ive not been the one who installed it before..

Yeah, you'll need to get a key from somewhere if you haven't purchased it. I personally don't use Nero to burn DVDs because it sucks, I've had much better luck with ImgTool Burn instead.
