  • Which iMac to buy?

ok, I'd post this on Mac forums, but I'd just get smart ass replies haha.

Bottom line is, I'm looking to buy a new 24' iMac (refurb) from Apple.com so I can sell the one I'm on now before the value goes down any further...

My situation: My desk faces away from a Window. As in, my computer screen itself faces a window, with venetian blinds... do you think the reflection would be horrible?

Anyone with Mac knowledge, please give me insight on what you would do, in my situation...

    My options:

    1) Get this one: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...nplm=FA878LL/A

    Stats:
    Refurbished iMac 24-inch 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - $1,399.00
    24-inch glossy widescreen display
    1GB memory
    320GB hard drive
    8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory
    Built-in iSight Camera

    2) Get this one: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...nplm=FA456LL/A

    Stats:

Refurbished iMac 24-inch 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SuperDrive $1,199.00
    24-inch widescreen display
    1GB memory
    250GB hard drive
    8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT with 128MB GDDR3 memory
    Built-in iSight camera

My biggest issue is the glare. There's a 10% restocking fee if I want to return it... Holla.

You can always go to the store to check out the glare, they have the overhead fluorescent lights which create a lot of glare.

Have you had a glossy screen before? Some people are really picky about the whole matte vs glossy screen thing. But if you're looking into getting a newer iMac glossy is the only choice anyways. For me, glossy doesn't bother me. The only time the screen was unusable for me was when I was outside and it was bright sunny skies outside.

I would go for the first one.

Yeah. I've been to the store, and it's tolerable. I just haven't sat there for like, say my normal, few hours plus. lol.

I don't mind the specs on the white 24', just that the video card is only 128mb.

I just don't want to order this thing, set it up, and get a migraine that day from the sun going through the window..

I've been reading that even when it's dark, dark images on the screen will show your reflection well also.

      ugggggggggh.

yeah... I take a shirt out of my closet and hang it on my curtain bar ...

seriously. It's just glare... the sun is only out 12 hours of the day. Def get the 2.4 with the better video card... you already said you're selling the one you got now.. so you'll probably sell this one eventually too.. so get the better one.

FYI, if you do any graphic design/photography work, that screen in the 24" is an 8-bit screen, which is basically one of the top-of the line screens. Enjoy your new Mac! I've had my MBP for a year and a half now and the thing is still extremely fast.

Thanks guys. I'm just hoping that when I put my 20" Core Duo up on Ebay, someone will buy it for a decent price... that and I hope that I don't get annoyed by the glare. I'll keep you guys posted. It's supposed to arrive on Friday the 20th.

Ok. So I got my 24' beauty yesterday. It only came with 1GB ram (last refurb I bought they maxed it out for free), so I had to put in an order for 4GB to max this bitch out............. not that it's slow or anything with 1.

Anyway, the thing that I was concerned about was the glare from the window behind me, and god damn, all I see is my window behind me on this luscious screen

I can't rearrange my room, so I'm going to have to try to buy that anti-glare film they sell. I hope it works. Blah.

Also, it came with one of those new aluminum keyboards. I fucking hate how they have the volume buttons on this shit... and even the brightness. But it is smooth on typing.

The keyboards take a little while getting used to, but I have the Bluetooth aluminum keyboard and I like it a lot. It's extremely compact and works great.

I've coped with the 'glare' and 'reflection'. It's good now. Just gotta tilt the screen down during the day. At night it's great. Bright as shit though.

Yah. I used to have the old style wireless one, but realized I never really move the keyboard anywhere or whatever enough to have a wireless, so I'm sticking with this wired one........ plus I'm loving the USB 2.0 ports on here as well. Typing is really smooth. I think I type more accurately with this one.

I'm still getting used to all the function keys at the top; Expose, Volume, Dashboard, etc...... but it won't be a problem in a week or two.
