    Troops revolt over 'suicide mission'
    By David Rennie in Washington
    October 16, 2004

In an extraordinary breach of military discipline, an entire platoon of US army troops is under arrest in Iraq for refusing to undertake what they called a "suicide mission", relatives of the detained soldiers have said.

In a statement issued yesterday, US military spokesmen in Baghdad would only confirm that a senior officer from the 13th Corps Support Command had been sent to a base near Tallil to investigate an "isolated incident", amid reports that members of a reservist supply unit refused to undertake a convoy mission.

However, the Clarion-Ledger newspaper, based in Jackson, Mississippi, said the platoon of 17 men and women from the 343rd Quartermaster Company were in army detention, after refusing to carry out a fuel supply convoy on Wednesday, because their vehicles were in such poor shape and their usual armed escort was not available.

Patricia McCook, of Jackson, said her husband Sgt Larry McCook had phoned her at 5am on Thursday, saying he and 16 others had been read their rights and ordered out of their barracks into isolation in a collection of tents.

Mrs McCook said her husband, a staff sergeant, understood the severity of his actions, but had decided he could not force his unit to carry out the mission to Taji, north of Baghdad, because three of their vehicles were "not safe to go to a hotbed like that".

President George W Bush and the Democratic election challenger, Sen John Kerry, have repeatedly clashed over reports that troops - especially reservists - are overstretched in Iraq, and were sent into combat with inadequate equipment.

john kerry said that the soldiers dont have the weapons and equipment that they need. Bush says they have everything they need. HMMMMMMMMMMMMM, who does this news prove wrong?

-Bri, it is almost a hopeless case to argue with some of the folk here... some do not understand, not comprehend, Military Service... there is a discipline that is taught, understood and lived... if you disobey orders in a Combat Zone, there ARE serious consequnces, and it seems as though these soldiers understood that... to lay the blame at President Bush's feet is very farfetched... It us up to the OFFICERS to ensure that their soldiers have the materials to do the job properly, and that is where the Supply Sargeants come into play... these senior enlisted personnel have to keep the Officer Corps informed of what is needed to get the job done...

this shit dont suprise me , what suprises me is it takes for a some soldiers to say no for it to actually make the front pages of the news.... Dude i know went out to iraq and when he got there they didnt have bullet proff vests for him , his mom had to guy buy one and mail it out to iraq.. Something is seriously wrong about sending a 18 yr old kid down the streets of iraq without a bullet proff vest.

To the guy who posted above who says its not bushs fault thats bullshit...if your gonna give the order to go war you need to make sure your troops have the proper armor, also this is nothing new troops have been mailing family to buy them armor since we first went to iraq so bush has known about this for a long time and apparently the problem is still there. Thats just HORRIBLE that its been what almost 2 yrs now and the soldiers still arent getting the armor they need. People been complaiming about this since the day we went into iraq i dunno how bush can sleep at night. If i were president id make sure every soldier had more than enough armor, if someone is willing to put their life on the line for me then im gonna make sure they are as procteced as possible. Bush aint doing that.

That is misleading though. Why weren't the weapons available before the troops were called into action? I think we can both agree that John Kerry is not personally responsible.

                      Summary
Bush ads released April 26 recycle some distortions of Kerry's voting record on military hardware. We've de-bunked these half-truths before but the Bush campaign persists.

The ads -- many targeted to specific states -- repeat the claim that Kerry opposed a list of mainstream weapons including Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Apache helicopters, and also repeat the claim that he voted against body armor for frontline troops in Iraq. In fact, Kerry voted against a few large Pentagon money bills, of which Bradleys, Apaches and body armor were small parts, but not against those items specifically.

for those that say bush isnt to blame...so your basically saying its not his fault cause he didnt know.. thats pretty fucking horrible if the person who sends us to war dosent know how much and what kind of armor soldiers will have.... Ive know since the start of the war soldiers didnt get the armor they needed , if i know that shit home come the president dosent...he is suppose to be the leader isnt he ? To sit here and say you cant blame bush is just dumb , obviously its not soley his fault but if your so gung ho to go to war you better be able to make sure our troops are taken care off which they arent. The fact that troops are being forced to stay longer than they are suppose to is bad enough .

Kerry and Bush would BOTH send us to war without bodyarmour. Neither of them know you personally, nor would they likely give a fuck about you if they did. You're not of royal blood, are you? So what exactly makes you think you matter to your leaders? Oh, I remember, one of them said that in a speech once......

Vote Kerry 2004 - slow down the war machine, even slightly.
Would you let the system sit (shit) down on your head again? NO, DREAD, NO.
                          Would you let the system
make you kill your brother man? NO, DREAD, NO
                          .
