  • The Pledge of Allegiance

Here's an e-mail I just sent to the ACLU. Feel free to answer this yourselves, as well...

    Hi,

My name is Chris Challans, and I'm a Senior at Leavenworth High School. I'm enrolled in a two-year Computer Repair class, and this year we have a new teacher. This new teacher, Mr. Jefferis, is a really "by-the-books" kind of guy...though regarding civil liberties, I don't think he's quite aware of what the books actually say. We've had several encounters about my refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance in the morning, and I want to find out once and for all just how far my rights go...

The first day, the announcement came on to "please stand for the pledge of allegiance." The other students stood up, and I remained seated. Mr. Jefferis looks at me and goes "Chris..." (in other words, "Chris, stand"). I told him that the Pledge was optional, and that I won't say the Pledge.

Several days went by; I remained seated with no problems. After about a week or two, I think Mr. Jefferis got kind of irritated with me. He said "you know, you can at least stand for the Pledge and just not participate." I said nothing to him and just remained seated. Standing for the Pledge without saying it is still a form of agreement and participation.

A few more days have gone by, and today I was writing something as the Pledge came on. Some time after class started, Mr. Jefferis walks over to me and says "you know, Chris, I'm pretty disappointed. I'm not going to force you to say the Pledge, but when it comes on, you need to at least put your pen down. You don't have to participate, but it's a school-wide activity, and therefore you shouldn't be writing when the Pledge comes on." I didn't really know what to say, so I agreed to "put my pen down" when the Pledge comes on. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I realized that I should by no means have to put my pen down. The Pledge is not a school-wide activity; it is an OPTIONAL activity. It's almost as if he's saying "you're going to participate in the Pledge, one way or another." Aren't I allowed to do as I please, just so long as I'm not disrupting the class? Putting my pen down when the Pledge comes on is a form of participation, however indirect. Is it not?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    What a fucking moron.

The Pledge is showing your allegience to your country. Thats why we say it. It isn't just some ritual we do before games and class. It shows that you are dedicated to the success of your country. OK yea he doesn't have to participate but how hard is it to stand up and put your hand over your heart. But whatever, seems like he is doing it to piss his teachers off more than having a real opinion.

When i opened this i thought it was going to be more on the topic of "God" being removed from the pledge. And on that i say no cuz it never specifies whos God, it doesnt say christian god or budda or whatever diety you believe in. So quit whining you oversensitive sonsofbitches!

I don't say the Pledge because I do NOT pledge my allegiance to my country. I refuse to Pledge my undying allegiance to ANY single entity, because they can be, and oftentimes are wrong. I will support my country when it does the right thing; I will not support my country when I don't agree with what it's doing.

      It's that simple.

You can believe your country is wrong, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't support it. Would you rather our country be turn communist or socialist. Do you not enjoy the freedoms that you take for granted everyday? I never said you had to think the government makes correct decisions everytime because it is in truth quite the opposite. But i sure wouldn't want to be sitting my ass in a 3rd world country starving and having some fatass with a camera and a mic asking ppl to donate 25 cents a day for me.

EDIT: LOL i thought in your first post you said it was an email u got, i re-read it and realized it was u. LOL i would rep ya but i guess i already did somehwere else.

Fuck the pledge, honestly. I will never say it.

Today at our opening assembly this girl sang the National Anthem and I said "VIVE LE CANADA". Fight the man.

Isn't the freedom to NOT say the pledge one of the great things about America? I don't pledge alleigance to the Canadian flag and I'm still patriotic.

Basically, a set of words doesn't make you more grateful to live in a free country.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I should support a country for doing something that I don't agree with?

I'll pledge my allegience to humanity, thank you.

I don't agree with our troops being in Iraq, but that doesn't mean i don't support them. If they gotta be over there then i hope they win. I don't want our soldiers to die for a stupid cause. That is what i mean by that statement.

In a sense we should be grateful to live in the heart of the world's beast, but also we shouldn't.

LOL no not at all any death is tragic. But if you were forced to fight, would you lose just because you don't believe in it?

I really doubt you'd willingly move to a place that isn't "civilized". I know that I wouldn't. Even if there are things wrong on this continent (and there certainly are), the fact that we can speak out minds about pretty much any issue is a really great thing.

Hell, I saw a guy say "Fuck You Dick Cheney" while he was speaking and he wasn't hauled away. That's a very important thing to me.

I wouldn't even fight in the first place.. I'm against imperialism.

You act like we're the only goddamn country that has freedom of speech. Guess what? We have alot less than much of the world.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean shit. We can't act on our thoughts if every national election is staged.

For example? Show me a place that's MORE liberal than Canada. I'd like to see even ONE video/sound clip of another person in the position Cheney is in to get told to "Fuck himself" on national television.

I'm not saying we're the only countries with free speech, but I do know that there are MANY countries where they do not posess this basic right.
