  • Mitt Romney, Education and Google & Wikpedia

    Associated Press, September 24, 2007:

During the town-hall meeting, Romney played to the Silicon Valley crowd, some of whom work at nearby Google, Cisco Systems and Apple Inc.

At one point, the former Massachusetts governor spoke of his effort to provide every sixth-grader and beyond with an inexpensive laptop.

"I want our kids to know how to Google and Yahoo and everything else, so that when they do a report on George Washington, they don't have to go to the encyclopedia but they can go to Wikipedia and they can learn what's happening on an online basis as kids around the world are doing," he said.

The remark brought chuckles from the crowd, since Wikipedia has been criticized for the accuracy of some of the public contributions to its information-sharing Web site.
Daddy, daddy, I found George Washington on Wikipedia !

Making technology affordable and making information convenient doesn’t sound too bad.
He mentioned Wikipedia, which may not be good for the kids who don’t check sources and consider that they may not know who the author is. But there are many free online encyclopedias that are better. Google is by the way starting their own version, knol, and it will be featuring articles, all authored and moderated by academics in that particular field, which is great. You’ll know who wrote it and you can challenge that person. Right now they only seem to have medical articles but they’re just getting started.

I don’t see how anyone could not agree this is a good idea unless you’re cavemen from the long proud line of people who has always doubted “making information convenient” will bring anything good. The people who are condemning internet and google, online wiki’s and such are the same people that thought that common literacy would be the end of wisdom , or that the printing press, who again, spread info conveniently, would make us ignorant. You might argue that the latter came true though, maybe the internet will undo the damage.

Mitt Romney says dumb things.... the guy has a business sense but in terms of public policy he seems like a moron. Consulting lawyers before launching nukes? Yeah... ok

Citing it as a source isnt the same thing as using it as your sole source of education.
