you should read the tutorial to find out the answer to the 1st question.
and yes i did my on avatar, i use a program called Paint Shop Pro 7, you can download it off a filesharing server. I use custom brushes that I download from places like http://www.magitek-designs.net/brushes/, you will also find a tutorial on how to install the brushes in your program here.

Youve always been sweet to me on this site so if you want your own avatar, just say the word.

the one i used is VERY old, very bulky, very crappy. its like a Umax something something... my brother got it from a dentist's office that was closing up. so the quality or the scanner means nothing, i think. just make sure that when the options window comes up on your screen, you push "scan black and white".

THIS MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE and i should have put it in the tutorial.
DO NOT SCAN YOUR IMAGE AS A:
    - color / graphics image
    - greyscale image

    SCAN YOUR IMAGE AS A:
    - "black and white/text only" image

this is VERY improtant, because it rules out any shading, creases and eraser lines in your image, allowing you to fill each area with color.

    here is an example:

    image black and white/text scan:

    image Greyscale scan:
(note the eraser lines around the mouth, the grey spots, etc)

image in color scan: (also those lines u see r because something is wrong w/ my scanner.)
(note the eraser lines around the mouth, the grey spots, and thorough pixelation.)

so the settings you scan your image with are what count, NOT the quality of the scanner.

    1)draw your character/image.
2)outline it (make it defined) with a fine black sharpie.
    3)scan it.
4)fill it with color in psp! (actualy you can even do it in paint..)
5)make SHADOWS -- without shadows it'll look pretty dumb. Use a slightly darker color than the area youre shadowing. Also, think about the components -- if the character has a lot of hair, naturally about half the face would be shadowed. (see example one). If the character is in a dark room, the actual color of the shadow would be a bit darker than if in the light.
...Just use common sense and think about where, in 'real life' the shadows WOULD be.. and you'll know where to put them.

and there you have it, your OWN cartoon character!

oh and -- make sure to save it as a .BMP file NOT a .jpg/.jpeg file. anything of lesser quality will mess up your image and make it all pixelated.

    have fun!!

here are some examples for your reference (hee hee i did 'em tonite actually)
    (1)

    (2)

here are the ones i started out with -- just simple drawings of cartoons, outlined with a sharpie!

as you can see this is very easy but looks like its real hard -- its impressive once you know how to do it!!
