    If you just can't curb the urge to wolf down chocolate or cookies, you should head straight to the kitchen. That's right. Because even though mindless noshing packs on the pounds like no other pastime, some foods can make a definite dent in your need to nibble.

    According to registered dietitian Milton Stokes, eating low-calorie, fiber-rich foods before a meal (salads, soup and fruits) may prevent a dieter from submitting to an all out gorge-fest. But some of the best appetite killers are nibbles that might be hiding in plain sight in your kitchen right now:

    Nuts: New research shows the fatty acids in pine nuts initiate the release of an appetite-suppressing hormone called cholecystokinin (CKK). According to Stokes, itís too soon to tell if these results will stand up. In the meantime, sprinkle pine nuts on your salad or mix them into pesto over whole wheat pasta. Want a more accessible nut? Try almonds. People who consume these nutrient powerhouses lose more weight and fat mass than those who donít. Why? The cell walls of almonds seem to act as a physical barrier to the total absorption of fat.

    Hot Stuff: Spicy foods have a metabolism-boosting benefit and can dull your taste buds so you're apt to eat less. Even foods that are hot in temperature -- like tea and soup -- may diminish your appetite. Just make sure your soup is tomato or broth-based (not cream!) and your tea isnít of the sugary variety (beware commercial flavored types like Chai). In fact, if you go green, your tea may actually give your metabolism a boost, too.

    Apples: Apples pack a lot of fiber -- twice as much in every bite as peaches, grapes and grapefruit. Fiber helps turn on the fullness switch and prevents you from overeating. Get into the habit of eating an apple before dinner. Chances are, youíll eat less of your meal as the fiber starts to kick in.

    Milk: Research shows that dairy foods promote weight loss, but the mechanism isnít fully understood yet. "It looks like calcium helps break down the fat in cells," says Stokes. "But getting calcium from real dairy foods, like low-fat or nonfat milk or yogurt, help more than taking supplements."

    Green Leaves: Two cups of cabbage, celery or lettuce provides almost no calories. And in most cases, you burn off the greens just by digesting them. Pickles and cucumbers count in this category, too.

    If snacking doesnít do the trick, sniffing might. According to Alan Hirsch, M.D., neurological director of the Smell and Taste Research Foundation in Chicago, just a whiff of green apple, banana and peppermint might help you drop some weight.

    Curbed my chocolate cravings with the chocolate rice cakes.. spread a lil somn on it like low carb/fat peanut butter.. delicious. Usually one mid day and evening.

    Love apples but they give a stomach ache, same with milk.

      Protein is less likely to be stored as adipose fat tissue and milk casein protein is very biodegradable. I hate hearing people say that milk will get you fat.

      Lol, scratch and sniff to lose weight I gotta try this. Good article though, fibre is great for dieters.

          good read. i already do the apple before meal thing, it does take the hunger away for a short time. i do it not to suppress my hunger but to keep my insides "flowing" i learned it awhile ago watching this dietitian on TV

                      Ok so I'm not fat, I just have a gut. I've been trying to run a mile every other day (that's all I can because I'm fuckin busy with work/school) so yeah... Im tryina burn this fucking gut off.

                      This is my new grocery list so far:

                      instant oatmeal - unsweetened, un flavored
                      cashews
                      peanuts
                      almonds
                      sandwich meat (turkey)
                      wheat bread

                      I had a question about the milk thing and the peanuts thing.
                      ok, for milk. about how much milk is alright to drink a day? I thought too much can make you sick or isn't good for you? then again I just watch the Professional movie and that fool drinks milk by the quart lol.

                      second, the peanuts. are honey roasted peanuts fattening? I love them lol

                        ^ apparently Soya and Oats Milk is much better than normal milk... cant say for sure but that soya taste good on muesli lol

                        I have heard that nuts are good for you, becuase of the oils they contain but should only be eaten in strict moderation as they are fattening, and AFAIK you should really eat, unsalted and I wouldnt eat too many roasted nuts

                              nothin is bad for u as long as u dont aggrandize it. The "how much" is important
                              problem with eggs is they have a lot of cholesterol (the bad one, I don't remember which one is which one) so it's no good for me with my stupid metabolism disorder.. (but I don't really care cuz I can't help it with my nutrition so fuck it 2:-|2 )
