  • Non-fiction, please?

Today I was talking with a friend about getting books for our summer readings. And I'm recommending some for him, things like The Stranger and Slaughterhouse-Five. And then he goes, "Oh well all those are fiction. I usually enjoy non-fiction." And so I pause and think of any that I'd recommend, holding my head up high with confidence... but that paused stretched for long, and then the most shameful truth came out of my mouth, "I don't know much non-fiction."

Library closes in two days. I have all the fiction I need for this summer, from Capote to Hunter S. Thompson books. But no non-fiction.
    Recommend, please.

faroffle, as far as I know Hunter S. Thompson's only fiction book was Screwjack...though Fear and Loathing is listed as a novel...everything else was non-fiction/autobiography

My favorite Hunter S. Thompson nonfiction book is Kingdom of Fear. Hilarious and interesting. I've been reading Hell's Angels recently, but I am bored out of my skull reading it. Maybe I need to go further into it. His book Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is interesting. I thought it would be funnier, but I learned lot more about politics from this book than I ever did in American Government class...or from the sensationalist media...

did you read all the books you asked to be recommended from this thread?

I recommend all the titles I posted in here

Other good nonfic books I've read as of late
-Sex, Censorship & Literature - D.H. Lawrence -beautiful
-Music at Night - Aldous Huxley
-Satanism and Witchcraft - Jules Michelet
-Kandy Kolored Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby - Tom Wolfe
-The Art of Seeing - Aldous Huxley

Ralph Nader's book Crashing the Party was extremely interesting. I only skimmed through it for about 3 hours at my library, but it had some mind blowing information

Reading isn't the only way to learn. There's thousands of free nonfiction audiobooks at librivox.org and gutenberg.org

In terms of HST, I liked Kingdom of Fear but equally as much as I liked Songs of the Doomed. Both are similair but great. I havent got around to Hell's Angels yet, but its on shelf waiting to be read.

It really depends what sort of subject you're interested in, if its politics check out Noam Chomsky or biographies are always good.
      Rep me for good karma....
