  • The Departed...am i the only one who doesn't think its AMAZING?

    Ok, i just watched the movie for a 3rd time last nite, i think the acting is incredible, and in some of the scenes the directing is just amazing...but everyone is making this out to be like the greatest movie ever and to me the ending is almost subpar?

    what exactly about this movie makes everyone so thrilled about it? Please try not to hate i actually am wondering if im missing something when i watch this, or if theres something i should watch for when i watch it again that would help me enjoy this film more?

    thanks to anyone who helps

    ill admit its not the greatest movie ever, its not even close but it is one of the greatest of 06. I think the reason why people enjoy it so much is because they were such fans of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or Goodfellas and they feel it can rank up with those Scorsese classics

          ^You need to understand Scorsese's movies, and watch them to appreciate the ending i feel. It's classic Scorsese.

            I'm with you. I saw it once, enjoyed it, and that was it.

            But since then the hype has continued to grow and grow, so I'm anxious to watch it again.

              its been a long time since ive enjoyed a movie like this ... face it, hollywood sucks ... and Scorcece's movies are always the highlight of the year

              its not that The Departed was so fucking amazing, its just that the rest of the movies released in 06 were fuckin terrible (most of them anyway)

                wtf are you talking about, THE DEPARTED is a classic. pound for pound movie making at it's best. Scorsese nails it in all corners.

                THE DEPARTED>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LOTR TRILOGY.

                like the producer Graham King said this is Scorsese's masterpiece of the decade.

                1970's = Taxi Driver
                1980's = Raging Bull
                1990's = Goodfellas
                2000's = The Departed

                no other director ever has managed to put out a masterpiece every decade like this, except for Scorsese.

                people who hate on this movie, i dont get u guys.

                not since Snatch or Gladiator have I enjoyed a film so much.

                comes out on dvd in the UK on the 19th, can't wait.

                    I agree... but I could understand why people would laugh and find the ending ridiculous. It was so sudden and cold that the audience really gets no time to let the deaths to sink in.

                    I actually agree, but I would like to watch both films again. The Departed is definitely more entertaining though.

                      I thought the ending was very good actually- fast paced and clever. I enjoyed The Departed, but Aviator is definitely one of my favs ever.

                        Goodfellas > The Departed > Casino

                        I think Casino is highly overrated and not too amazing at all, but Goodfellas <3.

                          I agree as far as Scorsese being the fucking man, but you have to be INSANE to say '06 was a bad year for cinema. I'll just say a few films...

                          Inside Man
                          Little Miss Sunshine
                          Volver
                          Pan's Labyrinth
                          Babel
                          Children of Men
                          The Last King of Scotland
                          Letters From Iwo Jima
                          Shortbus
                          16 Blocks
                          Flags of Our Fathers
                          Brick
                          The Science of Sleep
                          Half Nelson
                          The Pursuit of Happyness
                          Borat
                          Clerks 2
                          V For Vendetta
                          Dreamgirls
                          Apocalypto
                          Casino Royale

                          ...the list goes on...

                          As for the ending, yea, it's classic Scorsese. But please do remember the title of the film... The Departed... mufuckas is gonna die.. to me, it's amazing that these two (Leo and Damon's characters) were born in to their situation. Both wanna rise above what's expected of them but both fall into traps of their identity (by association) and ultimately both die tragic deaths. As far as everyone dying, there's a reason for every single one.

                          -Queenan was in the wrong place at the wrong time and Costello felt he had to make a statement by killing him
                          -Costello was a rat himself and Sullivan felt betrayed, as well as being shot at, he had to kill Costello
                          -Costigan got killed by the other rat because he had to protect Sullivan
                          -the black guy died because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, as well as knowing who the real informant was (Sullivan)
                          -the other rat died because Sullivan wanted to ultimately leave the mob world and had to sever all ties
                          -Sullivan died because Dignam found out who the rat was and that it was him to lead to Queenan's death

                          ...i hope that clarifys shit for anyone... if not, I'll explain whatever is needed... and I've seen this movie 9 times now... fucking amazing...

                              Easily one of the top films of '06. Top three in terms of Scorsese's work:

                              1. Goodfellas
                              2. Taxi Driver
                              3a. The Departed
                              3b. Raging Bull

                              Don't get bummed if you don't think it's the best movie out. People have different tastes and opinions of the movies they watch. For instance, I hated Borat. Everyone that i know and their mother loved that fucking movie. Me, i wanted to leave the theater almost a 1/2 hour into the film. It was boring and highly un-funny. But, that's my opinion. So, if you don't agree with this movie being AMAZING, then that's your view of the matter. Why worry about it?
