I got that feeling too, but i'm very interested in this. I'm not a huge fan of Luhrmann's work, but i'm impressed by each of his films.

          Well, talking of Oscar bait...

GROUNDWORK for an Academy Award campaign for the Baz Luhrmann epic Australia has begun - even though the movie is yet to be finished.

The 20th Century Fox marketing team is on its way to Los Angeles tomorrow to begin Oscar lobbying.

The long-awaited $120 million movie starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman is seen as potential "Oscar bait", despite production not being completed.

Wallis Cinemas program manager Bob Parr told The Advertiser from the Australian International Movie Convention on the Gold Coast the head of the Fox marketing team had informed him the campaign was on.

"They're confident they'll get Oscar nominations and are setting up their campaign," he said. "(They) head over to the U.S. on Monday to do the campaign there."

Given that a Best Picture award can boost a film's box office by $30 million, studios have been known to spend as much as $1 million on publicity, materials and celebrity-hosted screenings for their Oscar campaigns. Fox marketing director Marc Wooldridge said his trip to LA today was not specifically to set up Australia's Oscar campaign, but confirmed the studio would be campaigning in earnest from November.

"All good films released at this time of year have Oscar aspirations," he said. "It's definitely a prestige, quality film."
Earlier in the week, managing director of 20th Century Fox in Australia Marcus Oliveira predicted the film would overtake Titanic's 1997 $57.65 million box office record in Australia.

While that's extremely unlikely, the film has much going for it.
It's the biggest movie ever made locally, with Australians in all the key creative and cast positions, and it will open on more than 400 screens nationwide.

The marketing effort, with seven major brand partners including Qantas, Telstra, Bigpond, Jacobs Creek and Coopers, is described by Wooldridge as "the most ambitious and extensive campaign we've ever had".

The film will premiere in Sydney in mid-November and open in Australia and the U.S. on November 26. That's Thanksgiving in America, traditionally one of the biggest days at the box office.
But while Australia's success may revitalise the local film industry, could its failure destroy it?

          Mr Wooldridge doesn't think so.

"If the movie is successful it will have a halo effect for local industry, but I don't think people will stop making films in Australia (if it's not)."
I think a cinematography Oscar nod will be given, this film looks beautiful.
