  • The Last Thought

    ďRed stained the floor
    as well as the chalk
    that drew the picture
    of a poor dead fuck.
    I see this everyday
    and every other night.
    So many lost souls
out of reach and out of sight.
    My beat is the saddest,
    and the worst in town.
    A place where the poor
    tend to keep themselves down.
    Money and life squandered
    on a buzz, dope,
    flaw filled scams called dreams
that lead to a short rope.
    Brothers and sisters murder
    each other,
    for what?
    The few flakes of another?
    I canít wait to transfer
    out of this hell hole.
    Iím sick and tired
    of this crazy world.
    I thought I could
    fix the flaw,
    but not even the star
    I wear can draw
    the power I need
    to make people believe
    that good will still exist
    in a place so deceived.
    Look at this,
this man had kids and a wife.
    He had at one time
    a very prestigious life.
    He wasnít from here,
    mustíve been drawn in,
    with lust and pleasure.
    Just a God awful sin.
    Dumb bastard.
Will someone please cover him up?!
How does someone get to the bottom,
when theyíve lived on the top.
    I donít understand.
    He had it all.
    And now, nothing.
    Just Godís curtain call.
    This gun I wear,
can only protect me so far.
    And this shield,
wonít stop me from being scarred.
    The truth is,
    Iím no different from him,
    somewhere in my soul,
is a place just as dim.
    In a moment of weakness,
    I will be blind,
    lost in the rat race
    out of my own mind,
    craving,
    things I donít need,
    and wanting,
    for lust and concede.
    I gotta get out,
    Iím going home.
    No kids no wife,
    just me all alone.
    No one to worry
    or care of my demise
    no one to wonder
    nor ask why.Ē

    Detective Collins
    my he rest in peace
for on the day he found himself,
    he lost his lease.
    God claimed his fines,
    and collected without warning
on a man who owed to much
and of his fate just so deserving.
    He saw himself,
at the end of the story.
Looked around at what he saw,
    and felt so sorry.

"but not even the star I wear can draw the power I need to make people believe that good will still exist in a place so deceived."

I don't know why, of all your poem, that these few lines were my favorites. This part of the poem almost reminds me of the knights of the round table. Give me a sec on this (LOL)....what I meant is that this quote represents (to me) one of the few remaining people out there to uphold "the old ways"....you know.......(I may have interpreted wrong, but).....a cop who has one of the worst neighborhoods to patrol, knowing it's a place where the poor definately stay poor, and he still feels, b/c of his position that he can make a change, or be a shining beacon in the midst of a dark storm. It's marvelous! So, are you a cop in "real" life?

The rest of your poem was excellent. I could break down quite a few more sections, but your poem is so deep and touches on so many subjects (if you wanted to really analyze it) that it would take a long time. So, I'll just say MARVELOUS! If you are a cop, your poem might be proof that you could "quit your day job." I look forward to reading more of your work.
Life is what you make it.
