  • Man arrested after allegedly attacking Orlando Magic mascot

ORLANDO, Fla. - A man arrested after allegedly attacking the Orlando Magic's mascot during an NBA game was released from jail after posting bond Saturday.

William Jeffrey "Jeff" Hawkins, 39, of St. Cloud, put Stuff the Magic Dragon in a chokehold Friday night, Orlando police Lt. John O'Grady said Saturday.

"Stuff was nearly snuffed," O'Grady said.

The incident happened during the waning moments of the Magic's 102-98 win over the Denver Nuggets at the T.D. Waterhouse Centre.

"Stuff was doing his thing, running around, and apparently, allegedly, this gentleman leaned over the railing and kind of clotheslined him," O'Grady said. "He yanked him up over the railing, into the seats."

Police were alerted and it took three stun gun shots to get the 6-2, 240-pound Hawkins under control to the point where he could be removed from his seat and dragged to the arena's concourse, O'Grady said.

"He appeared to be pretty much intoxicated. He told us he had quite a few beers," O'Grady said. "He didn't even remember what he did."

Hawkins holds season tickets to Magic games, O'Grady said.

Orange County Jail records show Hawkins was booked early Saturday on misdemeanor charges of battery, disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer without violence. His bail was set at $500.

"It's in the hands of the proper authorities," team spokesman Joel Glass said Saturday.

Hawkins' home phone number is not listed, and a woman who answered at his business said she didn't know about the incident and couldn't comment.

Fans at the game were in a rowdy mood from halftime on after Tracy McGrady, Orlando's All-Star guard, was ejected for twice kicking the basketball into the stands. He was upset that no foul was called on his missed layup try at the end of the second quarter.

I think I speak for all Magic fans when I say if we don't start winning, the players will be next.
