Preseason means nothing. People I never heard of have more yards than people like Edgerin James, Rudi Johnson, LT, and all of them. Even though Manning puts up big offensive numbers (surprise there!) preseason is nothing.

^ I've liked Grossman since coming out of college and it sucks for you guys that he is out for almost the whole season. I hope your joking about you guys winning the NFC North especially now since you have no quarterback.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Minnesota cornerback Fred Smoot will miss Friday's preseason game at Seattle after jamming his already-sore right knee during practice.

"We're just taking a precaution to make sure I'm ready for Sept. 11," said Smoot, referring to the season opener against Tampa Bay. He got hurt Monday while running through the end zone and into a slope that sits on the edge of the Vikings' practice field.

Smoot, who missed much of training camp with a strained neck and then the knee injury, made his preseason debut last week against San Diego. He is expected to return to practice next Monday.

"We're going to shut him down so we are not in any danger next week," coach Mike Tice said.

Wide receiver Kelly Campbell (strained quadriceps) will probably be out another two weeks. But running backs Michael Bennett (sore neck) and Mewelde Moore (sprained ankle) are expected to make a full return practice next week.

Tice even said that Bennett would probably play this week if it were a regular-season game.
                            ROSTER MOVES

The Vikings claimed running back ReShard Lee off waivers, bolstering a banged-up position.

Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, as expected, was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Birk needs surgery -- the fifth operation on his midsection in just over a year -- to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

He said a date for the surgery had not yet been decided on, but recovery from the operation is expected to take three months. The team can't afford to keep his roster spot open that long.

Lee, waived by Buffalo this weekend, rushed 27 times for 128 yards for Dallas last year. He was supposed to compete for the Bills' backup spot behind Willis McGahee, but had a disappointing preseason.

Minnesota's top two running backs, Michael Bennett (neck) and Mewelde Moore (ankle), won't play in Friday's preseason finale at Seattle. Both are expected to return to full practice next week.

Rookie Ciatrick Fason (ankle) is also recovering from an injury, though he's expected to play on Friday against the Seahawks. Last year's leading rusher, Onterrio Smith, is serving a year-long suspension for drug use.
                            NICKELBACK? NOTHING BREWING

Tice backtracked a bit this week on his previous declaration that the third cornerback job -- which means a spot in the nickel defense -- was up for grabs between Brian Williams and Ralph Brown.

"I probably chose a poor example," said Tice, who frequently uses his media sessions to create competitions at various positions and keep players from thinking they have jobs sewn up. "I was trying to say that I haven't decided a lot of things yet, and I said, 'I don't even know who the nickelback is.' I probably shouldn't have said that, because I think we tried to create a competition that is not there. Brian is our nickelback. He could start on a lot of teams at corner."

The Vikings are still high on Brown, though. Their depth in the secondary is as good as it has been in several seasons.

"We are very fortunate to have four corners at that caliber -- and then a fifth guy that has experience and can also go play safety in Ken Irvin," Tice said. "I'll take those five any day of the week. I really would.

Vikings should win the division but they always find a way to lose it to the Packers....no way the bears or lions win it though-they both need decent QBs first....
