  • California passes violent game restriction legislation

    >> From GamesIndustry.biz:
The state of California looks set to become the second US state to pass laws restricting the sale of violent videogames to minors, after the California state senate and assembly both overwhelmingly voted in favour of AB1179.
It includes provisions for a $1000 fine for any retailer who sells a violent game to a minor, and for a large "18" sticker to be applied to the box of any violent title, which would be significantly more visible than the current ESRB ratings.

One final step exists before the bill enters law - it must be signed by Californian governor Arnold Schwarznegger, himself the star of several violent movies and games. Schwarznegger has 30 days in which to either sign or veto the bill.

          oh dear god!
I seriously doubt anyone is influenced by a video game.
if you raised your kid right he wont be a problem.
I've been playing violent games and watching violent movies since i can remember and i never inflicted a (big) crime.

I love how there is this huge deal about video games, but no one ever does this shit to movies. Raise a kid decently and video games will have nothing to do with anything, except maybe bein a nerd if they overdo it.

I think it is a good idea. When you are under 18 you are property of your parents. If they don't want you to have a game then you can't have it. After all it is up to the parents to monitor their kids behavior, this includes what they watch and listen to, this law is a good way to do it. Then they can't bitch about, "Oh my, I would have never let my kid play this game had I known they used guns!" or whatever else have you.

:: sits back and waits for kids to start hanging out in front of Media Play all like, "Hey are you 18? Do you have ID? Can you get me The Punisher for XBOX? C'mon I'm not a cop, I'll give you 5 bucks?" ::

Heh, I thought you had to be 17? That's the way it is here.

Oh well, I'm 18 in December.

Yeah, man. That's what I thought as well.

In fact, I'm pretty sure it is 17+. Just the other day I bought a game and was asked if I was 17...

Maybe it's different in other states though.
