    Ubisoft's Red Steel Revealed
Revolution-exclusive first-person shooter with big guns and swords? Game Informer Mag has the details.

    by Matt Casamassina
April 7, 2006 - The latest issue of Game Informer Magazine has a cover story on an ambitious new game developed from the ground up for Nintendo's next generation console, codenamed Revolution. The title, called Red Steel, according to the publication, is a first-person shooter that enables players to take control of a sharp sword in addition to an assortment of guns to fight off enemies. The mag published first screens of the title in motion, which appear to be in 16x9 widescreen, and they look pretty good to us. We encourage readers to pick up the latest issue to see the images for themselves.

The title utilizes the Revolution's free-hand style pointer for some innovative control mechanics, Game Informer reports. For instance, players are able to hold swords or guns normally or side-armed depending upon how they hold the controller. Meanwhile, it's possible to block incoming attacks using the sword, too. The publication also states that gamers will be able to jump over and take cover behind objects with the flick of the Revolution controller. On top of everything else, the mag promises that Red Steel will not only support an online multiplayer mode, but arrive as a launch title later this year.
The new issue of Game Informer Magazine is already hitting the homes of subscribers, as evidenced by the numerous scans that have flooded the Web. But it doesn't pay to steal. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. The screens alone are worth the price of admission.

IGN will have more on Red Steel in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

Rev] Screens and info on Ubisoft's Red Steel surface
6:08 pm - N-Sider Staff | Link to Individual Story
You read it right, folks -- the first screenshots and info on Ubisoft's exclusive shooter for Nintendo Revolution have surfaced, courtesy of the good folks at Game Informer.

This world-exclusive (as it so aptly called on the mag's cover) touches on various aspects of the story and control style, such as tilting the angle of in-game weapons via real-world actions in 3D space. From the article:
While we didn't get to play through a full level populated with enemies, we did try to complete the shooting range challenges as quickly as possible to put the team's claim about controller speed and accuracy to the test. Unlike most console games, we found Red Steel more enjoyable to play while standing up -- with the controller's movement-tracking abilities, we felt more natural playing while standing. The longer we played with it, the more natural it felt, and the more quickly we mowed down the targets.
It seems Game Informer's initial impressions of the title, control-wise, relate closely to a mouse and keyboard setup, as was expected. For those who expressed concerns regarding the ability to straffe in FPS games following the controller's unveiling at TGS 2005, the next bit of this article may be of interest to you:
Straffing around a target is incredibly easy, as keeping the controller pointed at an object while moving with the analog stick keeps you focused on your target.
The article goes on to list other areas of control unlike any other explored in the console world, to date. This includes throwing grenades using both over-hand and under-hand motions -- players simply act as if they're physically throwing a ball -- or pushing objects over by moving the controller forward (towards the screen).
Red Steel is being developed by Ubisoft Paris, who are known for such block-busters as Prince of Persia, Ghost Recon, Far Cry Instincts, and Splinter Cell. Game Informer plans to have this issue available through their online page, April 20th.
          Nice artile here as well.

Well, I would have been content with just the SSB and Twilight Princess control at launch. This is awsome news. They will hopefully have more on this title at E3.

This is just a rumor, but the lastest Nintendo Power issuse suspects that a Mario game will be a launch title as well.

Update: A few of you have sent us word that Game Informer is touting its latest issue online. According to the page (again, we unfortunately do not have a copy of the magazine just yet), the game is from Ubisoft Paris, who are known for Prince of Persia, Ghost Recon, Far Cry Instincts, and Splinter Cell. The page implies that these are actual screenshots, and confirms that more information will be found via Game Informer's online page as of April 20th.

Colin Kirby has transcribed the following from the article -- thanks Colin!

"not to assign any personality to the main character. You are the hero in Red Steel and this is your adventure. The only backstory to the protagonist is that he is an american male who is engaged to a Japanese American woman name Myu. On the night that you are supposed to meet Myu's father for the first time, she is kidnapped from the psh Los Angeleles restaurant you're dining in. You quickly learn that her father is a Yakuza boss named Sato, who is in possesion of an important ceremonial katana. A younger, more ruthless Yakuza faction led by a man called Tokal attempted to steal the sword from Sato to shift the balance of power within the organization. Sato thwarted the attempt to steal the sword, but was mortally wounded in the attack. Tokal's men kidnap Myu in response, hoping to trade her life for the sword. But Sato refuses to hand over the sword to Toakl, instead giving it to you, with the instructions to use it to find his daughter. Sato dies soon after diving you the sword, leaving you all alone and untrained against Tokal's men. Armed with the katana and a selection of firearms, you myst follow Myu to Japan and defeat Tokal, but first you must gain the skills necessary to confront him. According to --- the first third of the game will be more brutal by necessity. When you are first learning to use the Revolution controller, you will be less precise and --- (blurry and cuts off)

"a series of headshots, it is often more beneficial to take a non-lethal shot, such as shooting a gun out of an enemy's hands. I mnay situtations, there wil be a higher-ranking enemy who commands the others in the area. By defeating him and sparing his life, he will offer you his respect and help. The enemies he commands will surrender their guns and the boss may offer you a new weapon, a special path through the level, or other reward. Any time you spare an enemy, you will be rewarded. as it always takes more skill to spare a life than to take it. Freeze shot adds a lot of dpeth to the gunplay and is a natural fit for the Revolution controller, but isn't the only way that Red Steel adds spice to the combat. After all, why would you carry a sword through a game if you couldn't use it? Although the majority of Red Steel's gameplay will stress ranged combat, there will be times you need to get up close and personal. You can switch to the sword at any time, and if you can get close enougn to an enemy, you can use it for on-hit stealth kills. In other moments, you'll find yourself locked into intense one-on-one sword duels. Any time you take on an enemy with a sword of his own, you'll need to take yours out right away, or his blade will make short work of you. Swinging the Revolution controller in front of you, you will see the sword onscreen (cut off)"

(also in the Rev section, thought I'd post it here for those only interested in "RED STEEL".)

Graphics look unplayably bad and you guys know how much I hate precision control like the Revolution is going to have. And Ubisoft is known for producing total shit like Splinter Cell and Prince Of Persia too.

Further Red Steel Details From Game Informer
                        by Shawn White (04/08/06)

Via way of Game Informer Magazine's exclusive hands-on report, new information regarding Ubisoft's Revolution launch title Red Steel has come forth in the upcoming May issue.
Regarding gameplay details, players will have control over a sword and an assortment of firearms. The sword can be swung around to attack or be held in a defensive position to block oncoming attacks, while the gun can be tilted in any manner the player desires using the Revolution controller's motion-sensing capabilities. In addition, jumping over or taking cover behind objects is done simply with a flick of the free-hand unit, and reloading the gun is performed by pulling back on the controller. Additionally, players can simulate the tossing of a grenade by swinging the controller in the desired direction. Finally, Ubisoft mentioned that Red Steel would include some form of online multiplayer.
According to Game Informer's article, Ubisoft was one of the first companies to start experimenting with Revolution's functionality. After learning of the controller's motion-sensing capabilities, the development team immediately began playing with the remotes laying around their offices as a means of discovering what movements were most fun to engage in. Ubisoft's engineers emulated the motions for digging, throwing, swinging and more, and proceeded to present their findings to Nintendo.
"We got tons of ideas of interactions, and these are what we brought to Japan when we went to see Mr. Iwata and Mr. Miyamoto," said Damien Moret, the development team's marketing game manager.
A number of the team's experiments have no doubt found their way into Red Steel. Ubisoft and Nintendo have apparently been collaborating very closely on the game's development, exchanging ideas and exploring the possibilities of the new controller. More information about Red Steel will likely be revealed at E3 in May. Revolution Report will be on-hand at the convention providing updates and impressions should the game be playable.
Stay with Revolution Report for all the latest information on Ubisoft's original Revolution outing.
                        Another good article.
