Pre-E3 Alert: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
We take an in-depth look at the next installment of the Zelda series. Will it steal the show?
    by Mark Bozon
    April 13, 2006 -
E3 is always a special time of year. For fans of the gaming industry, the Electronic Entertainment Expo marks the new year of digital entertainment. It's a chance to see new systems debut, go hands-on with future Game of the Year candidates, and promptly note (sadly) which games to avoid at all costs. Nintendo's philosophy is often to save every piece of news and content for the big dance, though for some reason at this year's Game Developer's Conference (just a month ago), the Big N gave fans what we've been waiting for: Zelda DS.

Seen the trailer yet? Click above to check it out!

Since E3 is the primary time for huge announcements and heart-pumping trailers, Nintendo caught everyone off guard. Its keynote at this year's E3 is bound to be Revolution focused, so GDC was the perfect chance to show off the next installment of the Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. Though many of you have undoubtedly seen the trailer already (more than once, right?), this lull between GDC and E3 is a great time to prep for the yearly celebration. For that reason, we want to take a few minutes and analyze the trailer. For all you hardcore fans that have already dissected this one frame-by-frame, feel free to shout your opinions on the insider boards. For those that haven't had a chance to check out the video, however, take a quick look at the trailer either before the analysis or right after. There's a ton of great gameplay mechanics packed into just a few short seconds.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Look:
First off, as soon as the trailer is booted up we realize that Phantom Hourglass follows the Wind Waker design. Rather than going for a total top-down perspective a la Link to The Past or following camera such as Ocarina of Time, Phantom Hourglass really takes the series in a different direction, offering a hybrid of the two styles. Throughout the trailer you can see the camera zoom in for specific moments, or pull back to reveal entire rooms. What we don't know, however, is whether or not the camera work is controlled automatically or by the player. Also, it is important to note that Phantom Hourglass is also a sequel to Wind Waker, not just a design inspired by the GameCube classic.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Map:
Another great aspect of Phantom Hourglass can be seen in the interactive map. When originally displayed, the map takes up the top screen. However, at the touch of a button the map can be pulled down to the bottom screen, allowing for the player to actually write notes on the map itself. This will be amazingly helpful when dealing with complex puzzles or working the dungeons, as players will have the option of marking their map for key rooms or unsolved puzzle elements. We originally had this idea when looking at Casltevania DS, so it is great to see Nintendo step it up and really use the DS functions to their fullest on Phantom Hourglass.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Sailing is a Breeze:
Ask any Wind Waker player for their best and worst experiences, and you'll most certainly get "sailing" as an answer to one of them. While it was a great chance for exploration, sailing was a total pain in the ass for some players. The constant battle against the wind (in early portions of the game), teamed with the sheer amount of time it took to get from place to place was daunting at times. We know Zelda fans that have yet to finish Wind Waker simply because of the sailing system. Luckily, Nintendo has heard our cries, making the sailing system quick and easy for Phantom Hourglass. When players enter their ship, a touch-enabled map will appear at the bottom screen, allowing them to chart their course using the stylus. No more getting lost going from island to island. Nice!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Doing Battle:
Aside from the basics we all know, Phantom Hourglass brings back classic battle teamed with touch innovation. While core control is the obvious focus, Link can also be seen throwing his boomerang with touch control, taking tips from Navi, and calling out commands to comrades using the touch screen. From the short video clip you can see classic puzzles (such as the switch-blocks) teamed with new touch-interface actions. We'll know more at E3, but the trailer is certainly showing some serious diversity in gameplay. At the tail end of the trailer, Link can be seen doing battle with a boss that makes use of both screens. Hopefully we'll see a ton of uses for the dual screens, such as hook-shot puzzles, more boss battles, and maybe even throwback to old-school side view areas? Anything's possible.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Four Swords?
Don't start writing us mail quite yet. We haven't gotten any official word from Nintendo at this point, but Zelda Four Swords on Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection is just too amazing to pass up. If this isn't included with Phantom Hourglass, we'd fully expect an online-focused Four Swords sequel, as opposed to this version of Zelda being an all-inclusive adventure. No matter which direction Nintendo takes the Zelda franchise one thing is for sure: The Four Swords co-op mode in Link to the Past GBA was truly legendary. The Four Swords series may not have been the best received GameCube adventure, but the ability to use Wi-Fi Connection, two separate screens (teammate vision anyone?) and the return to portable gaming would give Four Swords the multiplayer resurrection it deserves. Don't even get us started on the possibility of Revolution connectivity. Nintendo, show some love.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We, like the rest of you out there, are counting the days until E3 2006 (26 for the record). Until then, all we can do is imagine the possibilities. Luckilly, the wait isn't long, and there's plenty of hype to go around. If you're new to IGN, be sure to check out our Nintendo DS message boards. Already an insider? Let's hear what you think of the latest Zelda adventure. We'll see you all at E3 2006, where Nintendo will give us a chance to go hands on with some of the best handheld games in industry history. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is only the beginning…

Could'nt think of a better article to start a thread with. This game looks better and better everytime I read or look at pictures on the game. Can't wait for it. I'm glad it's dropping sooner than later.

Wow, I never had any idea nintendo was watching me play WW. Thank god they're changing it. I just gave up on the damn thing after finding 3/4 of the triforce, it...was...getting...so...repetitive...

^You missed out on a great ending to WW though....

The final battle and castle is awesome to play through...specially the retro battles you have...i saved my game there so i can go back and play anytime.

WW was an awesome game, sure one part was repetitive, but if done right it can be done so fast so it doesn't matter.

^ Exactly. You can warp all over the map, so it's not even that bad. People just have no patience anymore.
