  • Sony's Tretton: "If You Can Find a PS3... I'll Give You 1,200 Bucks For it"

Sony's Jack Tretton sits down for a one-on-one with Electronics Gaming Monthly:

SCEA president Jack Tretton had many readers scratching their heads and grabbing for their cameras in the March 2007 issue of Electronics Gaming Monthly (EGM). In the issue, EGM has a rather exhaustive 9-page interview with Tretton on the PlayStation 3 and why the press in general isn't throwing rose petals before Sony's feet.

Tretton does his best to blunt any direct challenges from EGM as to the PS3s successes or failures this early in its life cycle, but he does provide some rather interesting quotes along the way.

When questioned on why PS3s were sitting on store shelves instead of on entertainment center shelves, Tretton responded with "If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than a few minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it." He continues, "I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that not a single retail location in America where there's a PlayStation 3 on the shelf for sale. They've all been sold in a matter of minutes."

When this interview was conducted in early January, there were still plenty of PS3's to be found on store shelves. EGM even acknowledges this and tells Tretton that of the 18 stores they called before the interview, half of them had PS3s in stock.

"I am not sitting in the store to know when they got put on shelves or if a salesperson is giving you accurate information, but if only nine of the 18 stores you contacted had supplies, that seems to be a clear indication that sales continue to be outstanding," responded Tretton.

Tretton was also pressed on the lack of rumble on the SIXAXIS controller. "I've personally played a lot of games that had a vibration features, and it personally wasn't all that compelling to me," said Tretton. "We feel that vibration is not part of our future."

Tretton also gave his opinion on the state of Blu-ray technology and how the PS3 fits in the grand scheme of things. "I believe we can complement the Blu-ray format," stated Tretton. "I don't think that we feel we can or should single-handedly carry Blu-ray on our back. I see it as an asset, though."

To see the full text of the Jack Tretton interview, you'll have to either pony up for a copy of EGM or wait for it to be posted online. And for Penny Arcade’s take on Tretton's PS3 availability comments, you can go here.
