  • Manchester United 4 - 3 Real Madrid

United went out of the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford last night, but not before they had taken Real Madrid to the brink in one of the greatest games ever scene at this grand old stadium.

They eventually took the tie 4-3 on the night, but they bowed out 6-5 on aggregate, which against a team of Real's undoubted class was something of which they should be enormously proud.

And the night was a triumph for Brazilian mega-star Ronaldo who grabbed a terrific hat-trick to help steer his side to the semi-final where they will meet Italian giants Juventus.

There had been a buzz around Old Trafford from early morning with fans being drawn to the ground by the magnitude of the game that was to come.

From the moment the final whistle sounded at Bernabeu two weeks ago United fans had been counting the minutes to this clash that really is one of the games of the year. All of them sure that United were more than capable of turning tis tie around which at one point in the first leg looked to be out their reach.

Real Madrid supporters had also started to gather from mid morning, no doubt convinced that they were about to see the reigning champions take another step towards retaining the huge European Champion Clubs' Cup.

There was one mighty shock for United supporters when the teams were announced in the build-up to the kick-off. Remarkably, there was no David Beckham in the starting line-up, although he was to found amongst the seven named substitutes. Into United's midfield came Juan Sebastian Veron after his spell out with injury. Fabien Barthez was back in goal after being replaced by Ricardo against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Old Trafford was rocking as the game started with United attacking the Scoreboard End. Roars of 'United, United' split the night sky as the Reds began their attempt to overcome what is widely regarded as the number club side in the World at the moment.

United, for sure, weren't going to be without support for this easily the best show of devotion by the fans since that never-to-be-forgotten Cup Winners' Cup night against Barcelona some 19 years ago.

An early goal was something that all United fans had been hoping for and incredibly they very nearly got their wish. Ruud van Nistelrooy made a brilliant run in from the right, drifting past two Real defenders before hitting a blistering angled drive. It was ferocious shot, but somehow Iker Casillas, in the Real goal, managed to push it over the bar. Only
four minutes gone, that would have put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Overall, it was a great start by United, a team that knew exactly what they had to do if their dream of more European glory was to continue. Then, in the 12th minute, they were struck a shattering blow.

Real, playing in all-black, swept forward to take the lead through Ronaldo. The Brazilian star scored with a great finish from the left side of United's area.

Immediately, there was a stunned silence inside Old Trafford. Real's away goal meant that United would have to find the net four time, without further reply from the champions, if they were to stay in the competition.

The immensely talented Real side showed no signs of resting on that one goal and proceeded to push forward at every opportunity.

United took a little time recover their composure, but they were soon back on the attack with Veron and skipper Roy Keane pulling the strings in midfield.

Everyone held their breath in the 36th minute when Ryan Giggs steadied himself on the edge of the Real area. The Reds' winger had made himself some space and with the goal in sight he tried his luck with a low shot that missed the post by a fraction.

Five minutes before the break and hopes were raised once again when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fired in a terrific low shot which Iker Casillas did brilliantly well to block.

United really needed to find the net before the break if they were to stand any chance of pulling back the three-goal deficit. And with two minutes of the half remaining they did just that. Solskjaer planted the ball into the goal area and there was the ever-reliable van Nistelrooy to re-direct it across the line.

Old Trafford erupted in a style not witnessed in many a long year. There was still a long way to go but at least the first step along the road had been made.

United raced back on to the attack as the second half opened with Solskjaer blazing a shot high over the Real bar.

Again a bright start to the half by United, but just as in the first half they were to be rocked by Ronaldo goal. Real were really turning on the - Figo struck the bar with a shot - and five minutes of the second half gone a stunning move ended with the Brazilian tapping the ball over the line.

Incredibly, the game took another amazing twist three minutes later when Real defender Ivan Helguera, under pressure from several United men, struck the ball into his own net to level the scores once again.

United refused to admit defeat and continued to press forward in numbers. Veron had a great shot charged down by Iker Casillas and Solskjaer was denied by an equally sensational stop from the Real number one.

United's uphill task was restored to three goals - to draw level over the legs - in the 59th minute when the incredible Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with a cracking rising drive that gave Barthez little chance of stopping.

The aggregate score now stood at 6-3 in Real's favour and the brilliant Brazilian took his bow as he was replaced by substitute Santiago Solari. The crowd paid him the ultimate tribute of a standing ovation.

Beckham, who had come off the bench to take Veron's place in the 63rd minute, lifted United hearts once again with nineteen minutes to go when he curled a trademark free-kick around the Real wall and Iker Casillas into the net.

This titanic struggle still had more to offer and with five minutes to go Beckham grabbed his second of the night to give United a slight glimmer of hope. The Real defence had been caught on the hop and the England skipper made the most of the lapse to tuck in United's fourth goal of the night.

Beckham was given the chance to close the gap even more in the second minute of added time, but this time his free-kick sailed over the bar and into the United supporters sitting behind the goal.

UNITED: Barthez; Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre (P Neville, 79), O'Shea; Solskjaer, Veron (Beckham, 63), Keane (Fortune, 82), Butt, Giggs; van Nistelrooy. Subs not used: Blanc, Ricardo, Forlan, Fletcher.

REAL MADRID: Iker Casillas; Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Roberto Carlos; Figo (Pavon, 88), Makelele, Zidane, McManaman (Portillo, 69); Ronaldo (Solari, 67), Guti. Subs not used: Morientes, Cesar, Conceicao, Cambiasso.

i thought despite the 2 goal deficit united would still edge through with Raul out of the game, but Ronaldo shone... Beckham should have started on the right with Veron, Keane & Solsjkaer up front with van Nistelrooy... but Fergusons a dick... united had the chances but didn't take them

Beckhams gona join Madrid in the summer - no doubt about it

Ronaldo's second and 3rd goals were classic and 2 of manchester goals were own goals. I thought Real controlled the first half and Man U got the second but didn't really destroy Real as you make it out to be. A great game no doubt.

I don't why Fergie left Becks out. Solskjaer should have played but not in place of DB07. I'm just happy that we went out in style and didnt get beat by them at home.

Palace v Stoke eh? Who needs United V Real Madrid ::

just got bk from the game...

Atmosphere today was unreal best it`s ever been in a LOOONNNGG time, the place was buzzin. At the end of the day it was always a high mountain to climb after our poor performance in the 1st leg BUT we did ourselves proud. at the end of the day we just beat the world`s best team 4-3, the lads never gave up, came from behind 3 times!!

It was an honour 2 see such a great match and see the likes of Ronaldo, Figo, Zidane, Carlos, Casillas, Giggs, Beckham, v.Nistelrooy all on one pitch. Ronaldo is truely the worlds best player at the minute he was superb today, 3rd goal was fuckin unstopable.

Real were very good but there defnce looked very week, i think Juve might have a good chance of beating them if they can hold em to a draw in Madrid.

people are sayin rip the united team apart and bring in fresh for next season but IMO only player who need`s to be replaced is Roy Keane it`s sad to say cos he`s been a loyal servent to the club and one of the greats but because of recent injries im afraid he`s past it.

Yeah Beckham shud have started, so should have Solskjaer. Fergie made the mistake of playing Seba Veron. Veron`s quality but afta bein out for so long u cant bring a player back with a game against Real Madrid when it`s so important.

Becks come on scored 2 goals, 1 terrific free-kick he impressed in that centre midfield role, just makes u wonder wat if he was on from the start??

Glad to see all us United fans give Ronaldo the standing ovation he deserved when he was subsituted. It not often u see an away player get such a reaction but the bloke is pure genius. definately gone way up in my estiamtions afta 2nite.

Glad to see that scouse bastard McManaman get booed from start to finish hahahahahaha classic

***EDIT*** Oh and BTW just if anyone`s intrested i seen a certain mr.Damian Duff outside the ground today in his nice merc comin to watch the game... maybe Duff`s gonna be a red nxt year??

This was a great game, so much action which led to a lot of goals, the crowd was really loud on tv. Ronaldo's goals were awesome.

big mistake for not bringing in beckham earlier.

such a nice game...roberto, zidane, figo, and most of all ronaldo showed the world the true meaning of football
