  • My Review of Joe Budden's "Joe Budden"

I first heard Joe Budden on a freestyle over the now-classic Grindin' beat. Rapping alongside the better known Fabolous, Joe obviously outshined everybody. From then I thought he had potential, but he slipped off the radar for awhile. My next encounter with Joe was not in a song, but in a videogame. He was one of the fighters you had to face on Def Jam Vendetta (a great game). This game made me think "Oh yeah, it's the Grindin' guy. I should check some of his stuff out." Soon enough, I learned of his album, and downloaded it. I was expecting a 3 Mic album. I was wrong.

Intro - No, it's not a skit. Over a guitar-laced beat, Joe introduces himself to the listener. Lyrically, it's not excellent but it's above average, and surprising from a rookie like Joe. This track is a good opener for the album.

#1 - Joe shows off the possibility of a story-telling MC in him, with his detailed explanations of how life was when he was young. This track also has Just Blaze's first beat on the album, which is pure fire. Overall, this is one of my favorite tracks on the album.

Pump It Up - This is the track that probably introduced most to Budden. With Juse Blaze's pounding trumpet influenced beat, I'm surprised this track didn't make the album sell better than it did. Regardless, it's a very "pop" track, but I honestly don't think it's bad. Joe's multi-syllable flow and sense of humor (Look baby, you fine but your girlfriend's not!) make this a good club song that eclipses the garbage that you usually hear from Lil' Jon and Chingy.

Pusha Man - On this song, Joe talks about shotguns, rappers with Milli Vanilli awards, and mostly about how the past of the streets compare to the streets now: "Now new-jacks spittin' about jail like it's cool." Yes, it does rely mostly on the gangster image that, say, the Diplomats parade around; the difference is that Budden actually has mic skills. The beat is great. Another banger on the album.

Ain't Gotta Go Home - The beat on this track would have you thinking that it's a club song, but it's more like Jay-Z's "2 Many Hoes." Joe spits about fake-thugs and people that generally annoy him when he's trying to have a good time. DJ Clue talks at the beginning and end, and is as obnoxious as usual. But the song is still good.

Walk With Me - This is a track about how people around Joe start acting funny now that he's famous. It seems like nowadays, there's atleast one song about this subject per album. Despite the unoriginality, Joe's lyrical skills and the violin-production make this another good song on the album.

She Wanna Know - This song reeks of crossover attempts. I'm surprised it didn't become a single, but after the album flopped so horribly, I guess I should have expected it. Not a horrible song, but it is very unoriginal.

Survivor - Joe barely raps on this song; whoever it is singing really stole the track. Infact, it's basically an R&B song with a few rap bars added in here and there. It's actually not half bad; the beat works and the singing is good, but it's definitely not what I expected.

Fire - Just Blaze gets the album back on track with this song. Like Pump It Up, it's another surprisingly good club-banger. Unlike Pump It Up, it features Busta Rhymes on the hook and the second verse. I like Busta, and I love this track, party song or not. Lil' Jon, sit the fuck down.

Ma Ma Ma - Another attempt at grabbing the ladies ears arrives with this song; he even recruits the talents of 112 on the chorus. It's better than She Wanna Know, but still suffers from unoriginality.

Calm Down - Any doubts I had about Joey because of Ma Ma Ma disappeared with this song. Over a somber and excellent beat, Joe raps to his mother. This song is very emotional, very hot, and one of Joe's best.

Focus - "Salutations!" This song has a very basic beat at first, and it gradually builds up until the hook, when it goes back to how it was at first and the cycle starts over again. It sounds good on paper, and even better through your earphones. Joe comes correct over the beat, and surprises me once again with his talent. This song also contains the bars that 50 Cent criticized as weak on his issue of XXL. Heh, they're better than anything he's spit since Guess Who's Back.

Give Me Reason - This track is about busting guns. Not too creative; but hey, Just Blaze produced it, so it's got to be hot. Joe disappoints me a little with his straight tough talk, but his clever punchlines make up for it.

Stand Up Nucca - The title of this song would have you believe it's another club song. I was expecting something like "stand up nucca but ya hands up nucca" - something weak. What Joe delivers is one (long) verse that tells stories about living in the streets that he's from, and how it turns a man into a "Stand Up Nucca." It's an excellent song.

10 Mins. - Yes, this song is a whole one-sixth of an hour. And you won't be mad at it either. I don't want to go into detail here, because you really need to hear it for yourself. This is one of the best songs of 2003, and one of the most emotionally touching. Plus, he rips the "Dilemma" type situation better than Nelly could ever hope he did. Two thumbs up.

Real Life In Rap - Joe calls out studio-gangsters everywhere and simultaneously drops more of his witty-punchlines. The beat is another guitar-based one, and it's hot. The only thing I don't really like is the hook, but it can be forgiven.

Porno Star - This isn't the way Joe should have ended the album. I think he should have put 10 Mins. at the end and totally cut this song. The beat is probably the worst on the album, and Joe's lyrics are too sexually explicit for my tastes. If you're a fan of Too $hort, you might like this. I'm not so I don't.

Despite the weak ending, this album is surprisingly good considering it's a debut album. Joe isn't Rakim yet, but he's far above average. He's a breathe of fresh air; nowadays most new rappers sound the same, but Joe is different. I think he's destined for greatness; if you hear this album, you probably will, too.

    Overall Score: 80%
    Best Song: 10 Mins.
    Best Beat: Pump It Up
    Worst Song: Porno Star
    Worst Beat: Porno Star

    Buy it.

SIDENOTE: Yes, I know this album isn't very recent. But a review was specifically requested, so don't complain.

For some unexplainable reason, I never paid any attention to this release.

I read somewhere that Just Blaze did the beat; my fault. Thanks for the correction, Tone.
