  • Synthetic Lexicons

Could anyone provide me with the link for an online lexicon of any synthetic language? I mean an actual lexicon (with morphemes), not a dictionary.

        :-/

Synthesis is characterized by the widespread use of affixes to form new words, such as languages like Greek and Latin. A lexicon is similar to a dictionary, but includes morphemes (smallest meaningful unit in language), instead of words (though, words can also be morphemes).

"Dogs," has two morphemes: "dog," which is a root word, and "-s," which is a suffix making the root plural.

I figured if someone didn't know what a lexicon was, they wouldn't be able to help me. I know what they are and still can't find them online.... English is an analytic language. The only time it uses synthesis, it's borrowing affixes from other languages. The reason I asked for a synthetic lexicon is because I figured it would be easier to learn the language if I learned it by the morphemes instead of words. It's like how if you don't know what, "annihilation," or, "nihility," means in English, but if you know that the Latin, "nihil," means, "nothing," you can make a good guess. It helps expand your vocabulary tenfold.

Thanks for attempting to help, though.

I'm too lazy to type the macrons, but in Latin: "Porta," means, "the gate." "Portae," makes it possessive; "Portam," means it is the direct object of the verb; et cetera. I need something that breaks down every element of a word. For example, I would rather learn: "un-," and, "tie,"instead of, "untie." That way, the next time I encounter the prefix, "un," I know it means, "not," and that "tie," is a root word.

Etymology dictionaries can substitute a lexicon if needed, but they explain how words derived, not individual morphemes. I don't need to know that, "scoto," derived from a similar Greek word. The problem is, those etymology sites are for English. I already know English. I want to learn a new synthetic language, which is why I need the lexicon of a different language and not English.

                  Thanks for helping, though....

Fuck it, I can't explain myself.

Here's an example of Latin synthesis. There four different moods, six persons, two voices and six tenses (Present, Imperfect, Future, Perfect, Pluperfect and Future Perfect). Total there are 132 variants of the root: "Laudā." Here are only eighteen. I think it helps paint the picture....

                      Present Tense:

                      Laudō - I praise
                      Laudās - You praise (singular)
                      Laudat - It/She/He praises
                      Laudāmus - We praise
                      Laudātis - You praise (plural)
                      Laudant - They praise

                      Imperfect Tense:

                      Laudābam - I was praising
Laudābās - You were praising (singular)
                      Laudābat - It was praising
                      Laudābamus - We were praising
Laudābātis - You were praising (plural)
                      Laudābant - They were praising

                      Future Tense:

                      Laudābō - I shall praise
Laudābis - You will praise (singular)
                      Laudābit - It will praise
                      Laudābimus - We shall praise
Laudābitis - You will praise (plural)
                      Laudābunt - They will praise

I'm gonna be going to MIT for Linguistics, if I decide to move, which I most likely will.

Ah sounds exciting. Yeah I was just going to recommend you atleast take some courses in linguistics since you're obviously interested. But what a silly thought, you weren't waiting for me to tell you that. Good luck!
