A new experimental application by developer Bjarke Viksoe has been released that offers the ability to turn your 1GB Gmail account into an FTP-like file server.

                  The Gmail Drive Homepage States:
                  Code:
GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium.
GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a GMail e-mail account, which includes storage space of a 1000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can easily copy files to your GMail account and retrieve them again.
When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the GMail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the GMail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in GMail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters), and it doesn't make full use of the secure internet protocols available.
Gmail Drive takes the concept of GmailFS a step farther. While GmailFS operates on a Unix command-line interface, Gmail Drive's ability to add a Gmail account as a drive on Windows Explorer makes it simple for anyone to use their Gmail account for file storage just like they would use an external hard drive.

If Gmail Drive were to add support for multiple Gmail accounts, and develop a system to allow guest logins, this would really help develop the science of filesharing utilizing an email-based system. Non-traditional P2P clients such as Peer2Mail have already been developing the concept of email-based file sharing. P2M, however, will offer a completely different approach to file-sharing-by-email with its eagerly awaited upcoming release.

As far as file sharing goes - the way that Gmail Drive exists right now, a group of friends could each upload a gigabyte worth of files to each Gmail account they have, and then share their passwords among each other, creating a small filesharing ring.

Although email-based file sharing applications might appear to offer full FTP functionality, one notable limitation is that file attachment sizes are going to be limited by the email service's server restrictions, most of which are stated as 10MB file attachment size limits. (though in reality, due to the virtual increase in file size caused by transport encodings, the actual cutoff often tends to be around 7.5MB) Users of binary newsgroups should have no problem dealing with files broken up into multiple volumes, but less-advanced users might find it to be an inconvenience.

I should caution users that I found Gmail Drive to be buggy - and it never worked for me, so I can't say much about its actual features or limitations. However, many 9down members have reported good success with it.

Gmail Drive is spyware/adware free and open-source.

                  very nice... thankyou.
