  • New York Post reviews the SNC - gives thumbs down

"WITH the showman ship of a modern P.T. Barnum, hip- hop's favorite Caucasian, Eminem, rede fined self- promotion last night at the Roseland Ballroom.

Eminem pulled a hat-trick of hype. By promoting his Shady Records label mates, he advanced his album, "Encore," due out later this month, and pushed his affiliation with the Sirius satellite pay radio company, which has tapped the rapper to head up an uncensored hip-hop channel.

To build the hyperbole, the Ballroom was transformed into a mock political arena for what was dubbed the Shady National Convention. On board was MTV, which filmed the proceedings for a broadcast on Nov. 16th. The event was even transmitted live via Sirius. For the small effort of the hoaky staging, Eminem got maximum bang for his promotion buck.

The preposterous premise of the night was that the rapper was being nominated for an unspecified office, such as the richest performer in hip-hop.

After waiting nearly 2 1/2 hours for the event to get under way, Eminem finally took the stage, dressed in a politically correct suit and tie.

He looked like a dork and confirmed that with a blathering ramble that made little sense, dishing up pearls like "People like you and people like me, like me" and "I'll run for anything."

The rapper made you want to run for the hills with inanities like that. There were a lot of people at the event who actually thought Eminem would have something meaningful to say, considering he is revered for his acid wit and aggressive music. He proved them wrong by laying a giant egg at the podium.

Where he went right was in the concert performance that followed the let's-play-politics portion.

But even here, the performer got low marks for his crass commercialism, which found him rapping what amounted to an ad for people to subscribe to pay radio.

When Eminem finally ditched the suit and got into his hoodie, baseball cap and running suit, he was much more at ease. When he was just a plain old MC again, he was able to concentrate on his real calling.

Eminem emphasized material from his new record during that musical set. From the concert snippets, that record is much less autobiographical than past discs such as his "Marshall Mathers LP." The new stuff shows a maturity, although it lacks the humor of his past.

The boasting toasts are subdued. His set did spark the audience to life with well-worn oldies like "Kill You." where he got some response going.

The up-front wait for the show to get started diminished the crowd's enthusiasm and shortchanged many from seeing the entire gig, which also featured scheduled performances by D-12, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent.

Hopefully, Eminem's delusions of grandeur are just a passing fancy. ::

I had hoped he had something more to offer than - nothing
I had hoped he would come with something amazing that would get headlines in all the media.
      At least an unknown track.

Stfu that was the illest performence ( you can download any other off the net and it won't compare) the way they set it up was crazy artist after artist just smashing it

The whole fam was there, the sh!t was live as fucI< the bass was bumpin' in such a small area that sh!t was just rowdy in fact in my area a fight almost broke out

Only thing bad I gotta say is coming in a 8 and waiting like an hour and a half ( which felt like an eternity) for something to happen, wish dre would've came off the bocony to from Encore w. Em & 50

This concert basically summed up the whole Shady/Aftermath artists into one concert. This was what I was waiting for my entire life a performance not only from Em but from everyone including Em. Dissapointed at the D12 show that EM wasnt there he redeamed himself at this concert. Eminem was amazing. I was also excited to see Obie which is prob in my top 3 rappers. This concert was the ulmitmate collaberation of the Shady/Aftermath crew. I think all the artists being there spoke for itself. Yeah the waite for the concert was bullshit, but whatever man having all these artists together and being right there up almost front row where I was will probally never happen again. And Derty Jay thanks for the tickets it was even better that it was free.
