  • AOL claiming unlimited rights to anything you say over AIM

    http://blog.contentious.com/archives...-aim-right-now

AOL is claiming unlimited rights to all content and ideas transmitted via AIM. That’s right – if, say, you use AIM to discuss a new idea for a business, book, deal, etc., AOL is claiming the right to use, publish, or sell your ideas or plans without notifying or compensating you.
America Online Inc. on Sunday moved to quell public criticism of the terms of service for its AIM service, insisting the controversial privacy clause does not pertain to user-to-user instant messaging communication.

A section of the controversial clause, which was first flagged by Weblogs and discussion forums, reads: "Although you or the owner of the Content retain ownership of all right, title and interest in Content that you post to any AIM Product, AOL owns all right, title and interest in any compilation, collective work or other derivative work created by AOL using or incorporating this Content.

"You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the content or to be compensated for any such uses," according to the AIM terms of service.
    That's fucked up..

              That's absolutely fucking disgusting...

If this ever goes to court though, I can't imagine a judge ever ruling in AOL's favour... I mean, this just has to breach some overarching legal right to privacy (or something along those lines).

Well it's free so I'm thinking that's why they can do this, if we paided for it then i think it'd be different. But I dunno anyone know?

Yea..AOL can put whatever in their rules, but I doubt any judge will put their rules above the law I doubt this is what aol really says though..

What I thought was funny was AOL saying this new Term of Service only applies to things discussed in chat rooms. Alright, alot of people use AOL at work, sometimes discussing sensitive information. WHO THE FUCK goes into "Teen Chat - Blunt Object Rectal Breaching" and starts talking about important business information?

It's pretty sad AOL would go as far as thieving ideas from their own user base, considering how much advertising they push for their Internet services.

AOL is doing bad thats why. I remember a year or 2 ago i read in the new york times that AOL was losing bussiness and that more people were cancelling their subscriptions ever since road runner. hit. It used to have a surplus and now they are losing lots and lots of money. last year the lost millions and thats why Time Warner split from AOL. remember how it used to be "AOL TIME WARNER"
