  • Thousands Of Indonesians Feared Dead Following Earthquake

Experts divided on whether it will lead to another devastating tsunami.

Two thousand people are feared dead as a result of a powerful earthquake that rocked the west coast of Indonesia, that country's vice president, Jusuf Kalla, said Monday (March 28).

"It is predicted and it's still a rough estimate that the number of victims dead may be between 1,000 and 2,000," he told the el-Shinta radio station. Estimates, however, were based on an assessment of damage to buildings, not bodies counted.

Nearly 300 people were killed in collapsed buildings on the small island of Nias, a land mass close to the epicenter of the massive 8.7 quake, The Associated Press reported. It also brought down close to 70 percent of the houses and buildings in the town of Gunungsitoli, according to reports from humanitarian workers on the island.

Up to 15,000 people in nations surrounding the Indian Ocean fled for higher ground as fear of another tsunami swept the region. An aftershock measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck the area again 30 minutes after the initial quake, and many more people are believed to still be buried underneath the rubble, government officials said.

Meanwhile, a "small" tsunami was detected in the Indian Ocean several hundred miles southwest of the earthquake, near the Cocos Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. High-seas weather warnings were issued for the entire western coast of the Australia, while many nations closer to the quake's epicenter, such as India, have withdrawn their own tsunami warnings, according to AP.

Seismologist Phil Cummins at Geoscience Australia warned officials shouldn't be so quick to remove the warnings. "I would still say this thing has potential to have a large tsunami associated with it," he told Australian Broadcasting Co. radio. "It seems perfectly reasonable to me that one should expect [and] be prepared for a tsunami of roughly the same size as that that happened on December 26."

Bernd Schell, head of tsunami operations for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, told AP there were reports of heavy damage on Indonesia's Simeulue Island.

President Bush was informed of the quake and has already moved forward with offers of aid for the effected regions.
