Nelly Urges STL Youth: "Save your money and stay focused..."
    by Kevin L. Clark

Nelly joined Chingy, Paul Wall and Russell Simmons recently to encourage teens to "stay focused, set a budget, and have a plan" during the St. Louis stop of the Hip-Hop Summity Action Network's national youth financial empowerment tour.

The St. Louis Summit was the fifth stop of an unprecedented national campaign to raise awareness among millions of young adults about the importance of financial literacy. Topics addressed included basic banking, repairing and understanding credit scores, asset and wealth management, auto financing, home ownership and entrepreneurialism.

Nelly shared with his St. Louis brethren a story to encourage people to save their money.

"How many people out there really set a budget?" Nelly questioned. "I remember when I was living paycheck to paycheck. Sometimes it'd be paycheck to the following two paychecks and we'd have to decide whether this month the heat would be on and we'd have to drive to a friend's house to see if they're home or the telephone would be on and we'd be boiling water," Nelly emphasized. "You have to have a plan and stick to it. When your homies want you to be hanging out, save your money and stay focused on where you're going."

Chingy made reference to his "Chingy For Change" foundation and Houston native, Paul Wall, told the participants the importance of staying in school and gaining a college degree. "We give out scholarships to students who would not normally qualify, but who demonstrate a desire to learn. With [Chingy For Change] helping students graduate from college, it allows us to give back to the community," Chingy said.

The seminar also included automotive finance experts Peter Guthrie, James Whitlow, and Gerrod Parchmon who represented Chrysler Financial. Anheuser-Busch executive Johnny Furr shared personal stories of his own financial empowerment along with a few enlightening tips and practices to help the youth take control of their financial futures.

Russell Simmons, Chairman of HSAN and William F. Jones, Jr., Vice President of Chrysler Financial have pledged to work together to coordinate this national campaign under the theme entitled, "Get Your Money Right."

Simmons stressed the importance of karma and how that relates to getting your money right.

"It's all about the work," Simmons declared. "Nothing is going to fall into your lap. If you want to be a lawyer, see yourself as a lawyer, go to the library and start learning the law. If you want to be a rapper, start rapping and get out there. Live your life as if you already are where you want to be."

The next few stops on the tour are Kansas City (Sept. 9th), Los Angeles (Sept. 17th), and Trenton, New Jersey (Sept. 30th). Log onto http://www.hsan.org for more information.

Its great when former cocaine dealers like Nelly encourage young people to get real jobs whilst continuing to fondly recalling their old profession in their songs
"A young youth, yo rockin the gold tooth, 'Lo goose
Only way, I begin to g off was drug loot
And let's start it like this son, rollin with this one
And that one, pullin out gats for fun"
