Villagers stunned as 4-kilogram meteorite lands in rural Zimbabwe field
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Villagers said a meteorite that slammed into rural Zimbabwe sounded like a helicopter as it landed, state media reported Tuesday.
The 4.1-kilogram, white-speckled black lump landed Aug. 22 in the remote Dotito area of the Zambezi Escarpment, about 140 kilometres north of the capital, Harare, The Herald newspaper reported.
It was believed to consist mainly of nickel and iron. It was taken to a police forensic laboratory for study, and later will be taken to the national museum.
Those who saw it land were still "dumbfounded," The Herald reported.
Residents of Chaworeka village were working in their fields when they heard a sound like a helicopter at around 5 p.m. on Aug. 22, police Insp. Michael Munyikwa told the paper.
Jeriko Muzanembi, who was cutting poles, said the meteorite landed a few metres from his house.
"The impact of the stone cut 15 centimetres deep into the earth when it landed," Munyikwa was quoted as saying.

Iowa man walks off without paying for leg
DES MOINES, Iowa - A man test-fitting a $17,000 artificial leg ran off without paying the bill, police said. Spectrum Prosthetics and Orthotics reported the theft of the specially designed leg this week.
Police said the crime happened after the man came in on Aug. 19 to be fitted for the prosthetic.
He "was allowed to take it for a couple hours to ensure that the fit was proper," a police report said.
Sgt. David Murillo said the man didn't come back.
Todd Schweizer, one of the owners of the company, said employees had been working with the man for about a week.
"We were trying to meet his needs," Schweizer said.
The store was left with a cellular telephone number, but no one answers, said Detective Robert Lewis. There also was no answer at the door at an address left by the man.
Lewis said employees may have believed the man was coming back, and that's why they waited five days to report the theft.

Report: Penis Issue Harming Thai Cabinet
(08-24) 16:53 PDT BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) --
Thailand's prime minister is trying to ferret out a government minister who allegedly had a penis enlargement procedure, saying news of it is affecting the Cabinet's reputation, a news report said Wednesday.
"Who did it? Tell me," Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra told his ministers at Tuesday's Cabinet meeting, triggering a round of banter and causing some to squirm in their chairs, The Nation newspaper said.
Last week, a woman — being sued for defamation by a clinic after she claimed it gave her a face-disfiguring silicon injection — said a Cabinet member had received a penis-enlargement injection at the same clinic and urged him to come forward as a witness in her defense.
Calling on the official through reporters on the steps of Government House on Tuesday, the woman, Rawiwan Setharat, said, "The problem of my face is bigger than the problem of your penis."
"This has affected the reputation of the Cabinet, because the news went around the world. I don't want the people to think the Cabinet members are obsessed with this kind of thing," the newspaper quoted Thaksin as telling his ministers.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan said no one had admitted to the enlargement procedure. Other ministers joked about various suggestions on how he could be identified.
