Hip-Hop Charts:
Kanye 'Registers' Major Sales, Yayo 'Seduces' Charts, 'Harlem' Reps for Jim Jones
This week in the Hip-Hop Charts, Kanye West and Tony Yayo are off the charts, Black Eyed Peas hold tight and Jim Jones leaves his mark.
Fueled by the smash single, "Gold Digger," the cover of Time Magazine and outstanding reviews, Kanye's Late Registration buzz has arguably doubled the hype generated by its predecessor, The College Dropout. And it also seems on track to double the first week numbers as well. According to early reports, Late is on pace to sell well over 800,000 units and has a chance to reach up to 850,000 CDs in its first week. Meanwhile, Tony Yayo's Thoughts Of A Predicate Felon is also putting up big digits. With "Curious" and "Pimpin" building steam, Yayo's freshman effort is reportedly headed for 250,000 LPs sold in its first week.
Back on the current charts, Black Eyed Peas are still putting up strong sales 12 weeks after Monkey Business' debut. With "Don't Lie," the record's second single, gaining momentum, Monkey Business jumps two spots to #4 -- selling 85,368 units according to Nielsen's Soundscan. The set has moved 1,208,947 copies to date.
Right behind the peas, Jim Jones has eclipsed the first week sales posted by his debut offering, On My Way To Church. As "Summer wit Miami," "Baby Girl" and "G's Up" continue to garner spins, Harlem: Diary of a Summer enters at #5 -- selling 74,443 albums. With early sales reaching up to 1,180 CDs, Jones' first week total stands at 75,652 records -- a solid opener for an indie release.
At #7, Young Jeezy is quickly creeping towards his first gold plaque. In its fifth week, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 climbs three slots and sells 61,174 units. The CD has sold 451,142 copies to date.
Also approaching gold status, Bow Wow remains at #18 this week. With "Like You" dizzying from spins, Wanted scans 40,746 LPs this week -- bringing its total to 414,250 copies after seven weeks on the charts.
Further down the charts, Ying Yang Twins seem destined for their second consecutive platinum plaque. With the Mike Jones-assisted "Badd" continuing in the successful footsteps of "Wait (The Whisper Song)," U.S.A. (United States of Atlanta) finds 32,216 costumers. This week, the album slips one position to #23 and has sold 610,113 CDs to date.
Lastly, Mike Jones keeps flying off the shelves, 50 Cent steps up and Missy Elliot doesn't budge. In its 19th week, Who Is Mike Jones? slips two spots to #25 and sells 30,319 units. The record has now sold 1,030,572 records. At #33, The Massacre climbs two spots to move 24,090 copies-bringing its total to 4,278,632 sets sold to date. And not be "undone," Missy serves of 22,089 dishes of Cookbook to hold down the #38 spot for the second straight week.
Next week, look for Kanye West to top the charts for the first time in his career.
