  • FDA Approves Pegasys for Treatment of Hepatitis B

Pegasys, manufactured by Roche, is the first and only pegylated interferon treatment with FDA approval for chronic hepatitis B. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a) for the treatment of both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative hepatitis B.

There are approximately 80,000 new cases of hepatitis B infection each year in the United States; over 1.25 million Americans are chronically infected with the virus. Hepatitis B virus is spread by contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person.

“This approval provides another important option for the treatment of hepatitis B,” said ALF President and CEO Frederick G. Thompson. “We commend Roche for its extensive research and commitment to treating people with chronic liver diseases.”

Interferon is a type of protein produced by the body’s cells in response to viral hepatitis and other infections. Interferon stimulates the body’s immune system to fight viral infections and affect the ability of viruses to divide in liver cells. In pegylation, one or more chains of polyethelene glycol, or PEG (a gelatinous compound used to thicken food), are bonded to an interferon molecule. The PEG works to keep the interferon in the body longer, without reducing efficacy.

Pegylated interferon in combination with ribavirin is currently the standard of treatment for chronic hepatitis C. Other FDA-approved treatments of chronic hepatitis B include alfa interferon, lamivudine or adefovir dipivoxil.
