  • [4/10] - Mixtape Monday: LL Cool J Stays Hungry, Cam'ron Delivers A Killa Preview

    from mtv.com:
    rtist: DukeDaGod

    Representing: Dip Set

    Mixtape: The Movement Moves On

411: Does everyone in the Dip Set get money? It looks like the answer is yes. Cam'ron is finding ways to break all of his people off. While everyone awaits the arrival of Killa Season the album and movie Cam supplies the marketplace with the second album from his team's A&R man, DukeDaGod.

    Joints To Check For
"Frustrated" by Jim Jones featuring Max B and 40 Cal. Max B is definitely going to be one those dudes keeping NYC hot on a major level soon. He has lyrics and rhythm, and his off-key sing-song delivery is melodic. Now back to the record: You have to listen closely to Jim Jones' verse. He's dissing a cat from Harlem who used to run with Diddy. It's not Mase, though; Loon catches it here.

"Y'all Can't Live His Life" and "White Girl" by Cam'ron. Speaking of off-key, the girl on the hook from "Y'all Can't Live" may need a few more singing lessons. But we're listening to this track for Cam, right? After a long dialogue about getting money (over seven minutes in all), he's in Killa mode, rapping, "I'mma slap you with a C-note since you keep it a hunn'ed." "White Girl" has been on mixtapes for a few weeks, but that version had such poor sound quality, it was barely listenable. Duke has the real thing. And by the way, Cam is not talking about a Caucasian female here.

"Losing My Love" by Juelz Santana. Elz says that he's so fed up with clowns in the game he thinks he may be losing his zeal for rap. ... Nah!

'Hood's Heavy Rotation: Bubbling Below The Radar

"Freeze" by LL Cool J featuring Lyfe Jennings
    "Chamber of Fear" by RZA
"Get Right" by Papoose featuring Busta Rhymes
"New York Sh--" by Busta Rhymes featuring Swizz Beatz
"Don't Play" by the Game and MC Eiht

Rick Ross recently popped up in New York, rubbing shoulders in the studio with none other than Jay-Z. Hov is overseeing Ross' new album, Port of Miami, and rapped a guest verse on the remix to Double-R's street anthem "Hustlin'." "We have some more surprises," Ross said, hinting at other guests on the remix. "But I just heard what Jay did, and it's a $10 million 16 [bars] straight up." Ross said he's jumping on a couple of remixes as well, including Shawnna's "Gettin' Some" and T.I.'s "What You Know."

Ross says he's jumping on a couple of remixes of his own, Shawnna's "Gettin' Some" as well as T.I.'s "What You Know." ...

Getting some spins, Shawnna's getting, getting some spins. DTP's first lady's "Getting Some" has been hot in the streets and strip clubs since October, and now that she's finally shot a video for the record, it's not slowing down. Ludacris just recorded vocals for the remix.

"Recording the record was funny," Shawnna says about the track, which samples an explicit Too Short line in its uncut form. "My manager, John Monopoly, said, 'I got that hit!' He called me two in the morning. ... I said, 'I can't believe you woke me up for this sh--.' There's no way in hell we gonna be able to get any type of video or radio play with a song where the first three seconds is saying, 'I was getting some h---.' "

Despite her skepticism, Shawnna had faith in Monopoly and recorded the song last year. Turns out he was right.

"I just went in the studio and had fun with it," she said. "I wanted to make it fit right in with the songs that's out right now. If you notice, I don't really talk about the actual act in my verse. I big up women, I'm kinda kicking it and having fun. Then at the end I say something slick."

Shawnna says her slick talk is going to carry over to her second LP, Chicago, which is due in June. She's moved from Atlanta back to her Windy City hometown and says even though her Worth the Weight album was slept on, she's ready to explode this time.

"It's fun," she said of Chicago. "It's me doing me. Luda don't really stand over people. He lets you do your thing. He has our confidence up, and we're ready to put out some more banging records. I study the industry and see what people wanna hear and the album is full of what's going on right now. We have Three 6 Mafia, we trying to get something with Jeezy. It's been so crazy. I can't even tell you who's on it. People are just sending in 16 [bars] off [general principal] because they gotta be down with the movement."

The sexy MC says she was shocked to hear that Busta Rhymes sent in a verse for her LP.

"Busta is a great look," she said. "I had a chance to listen to Busta's album and he played his joint from top to bottom and I was ready to crack all my records and start all over again. That's how incredible his album was. With all that said, the most surprising 16 was Busta Rhymes. I'm such a fan of his and knowing that he was paying attention to me and wanted to help me out, felt good." ...

With all the people ridin' with Chamillionaire, just how big is homie's whip? His "Ridin' Dirty" has four international remixes, an NYC remix with Jae Millz and Papoose, another East Coast remix with Maino, a Texas version with UGK, another Texas version on the way with the likes of Magno and an all-Cali version with DJ Quik, Mistah F.A.B., San Quinn, Keak Da Sneak and the Game.

"I was just on the road everywhere and bumping into people and building relationships with everyone," explained Cham, who's on tour with Lil' Flip. "In each market I can see who's hotter and who's not and who's running the street. With 'Ridin' Dirty' getting so big and running the streets, I'm running into rappers and they're saying, 'I'm feeling that record.' Then the talks came up: 'Since everybody is feeling the song, we should do a remix for everywhere. Let's branch it out.' "

While on tour with Flip, Cham says he has a recording studio in the back of his bus and has been able to just about finish the follow-up to his classic Mixtape Messiah, titled you guessed it Mixtape Messiah 2. That's coming out in a few weeks along with a DVD.

"With mixtapes, it's a whole lot different," he said. "There's no trying to do a single, I'm just ripping it. I'm speaking with a purpose and if anyone is kind of skeptical about whether I'm sick lyrically, they're gonna feel the kid after this one."
