  • 4/10/06 Suspects in assault say they were hired

This Shit Happend @ my Job on Satuday i was off im glad i wasnt there lol

Two people arrested Sunday after an attack on a pregnant woman told state police they were hired to beat her up by someone who wanted to harm her unborn child.

Duvell J. Nixon, of the first block of Halcyon Drive, and Melissa G. Cohen, 25, of the first block of Rose Lane, both near New Castle, were each charged with attempted first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, conspiracy and other offenses in the assault, which occurred in the parking lot of a local sports complex.

The 32-year-old victim, who is five months pregnant, was admitted to Christiana Hospital for observation, state police spokesman Lt. Joseph P. Aviola Jr. said. She suffered bruises, swelling and cuts, but her unborn baby was reportedly uninjured.

Aviola said the victim and another woman were walking to their cars about 6:45 p.m. Saturday at Vince's Sports Center at 14 Gender Drive in Newark. They did not see a man in a ski mask had pulled his maroon minivan next to the victim's car.

As the woman was getting into her car, the assailant jumped out and grabbed her, punching and kicking her in the stomach, head, arms, chest and legs.

As the woman struggled to get away, the masked man tried to force her into the van. The victim's friend ran to help her, Aviola said.

Another woman sitting in the van hit the victim's friend, who suffered a cut to the back of her head and fell to the ground.

Both assailants then continued trying to put the pregnant woman in the van, Aviola said.

The victim's friend, still on the ground, noticed that the van's license plate was covered with duct tape, police said. She removed it and wrote down the numbers.

Aviola said at that point, a 57-year-old man tried to intervene and help the victims, but was driven back when the masked man pulled out a gun.

Unable to force the pregnant woman into the van, the assailants then fled, Aviola said. Witnesses later told investigators they saw two other women in the back of the van.

Police contacted the owner of the van, a 1989 Dodge Caravan, who told them her son was using it. They asked her to have him call police, which he did -- from a pay phone on Sunday morning.

Investigators traced the call and arrested Nixon and Cohen at the phone at Kirkwood Highway and Red Mill Road.

The two told investigators they were hired to assault the victim, but would not name who hired them, police said.

Nixon was committed to Young Correctional Institution on $111,000 cash bail, and Cohen was committed to Baylor Women's Correctional Institution on $61,500 bail.

During a search of the van, detectives recovered a BB gun believed to have been used to threaten the man who tried to help the two women during the attack.

Aviola said detectives are still trying to determine who ordered the attack.

"They have reason to believe [Nixon] was paid to do the assault," Aviola said. "It's unclear whether she was supposed to lose the baby or not."

Witnesses told investigators that the van was seen in the parking lot prior to the incident, staking out the place.
