  • APRIL 20TH : Best Of Proof's Discography (from xxl.com)

    R.I.P. Proof
    How Come

XXLMAG.COM takes you beyond “My Band” to hear the slept-on musical history behind one of Detroit hip-hop’s most beloved figures.

While most hip-hop fans are familiar with D12’s singles “Purple Pills,” “My Band” and “How Come,” the group’s founder Proof has remained one of the most active MCs in Detroit’s underground even while touring stadiums around the world. While history will undoubtedly remember him as Eminem’s animated right hand man, Big Proof’s own roots in the Detroit battle rap scene can’t be overlooked. As D12’s most convincingly street-wise MC, Proof combined gruff tough talk with acute introspection and a fascination with psychedelic imagery. Get familiar with the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Detroit” with this selection from Proof’s extensive musical catalog

Proof “Da Science” (Produced by J. Dilla) (1996) From Detroit Hip-Hop Vol. 1
Proof hooked up with fellow Detroit native J. Dilla for one of his first records. The two would reunite in 2004 on the track “Bring It 2 Me.”

D12 “Art of War” (1997) From D12 Underground EP
A handful of early D12 songs circulated in 1997, which were later compiled on the D12 Underground EP. Proof led this one off with battle-ready gems like “You lack phat tactics, your thoughts are Dexitrim/Whipping my dick out on nuns if they say sex is sin.”

D12 feat. Eminem “Chance To Advance” (1997) From D12 Underground EP
Proof held his own around a pre-superstar Eminem with lines like: “Got a bitch named Trigger/My main squeeze’ll make your brain freeze.”

Proof “Tim Westwood Freestyle” (1999) Live in London
With the success of Eminem’s Slim Shady LP, Proof went from being a local artist to an international celebrity. Here he’s heard rhyming on popular UK radio jock Tim Westwood’s show.

Eminem feat. Proof “Just Rhymin’ With Proof” (2000) Live in Paris
Em and Proof trade bars on this seven minute patchwork of beats that was originally released via Eminem’s website.

    D12 “Fight Music” (2001) From Devil’s Night
While the group’s debut is best remembered for silly first single “Purple Pills,” Proof shines best on the more street-wise second single.

Promatic feat. Bizarre “Ecstacy” (2001) From Promatic
Following the Platinum success of Devil’s Night, Proof went back home to collaborate with local MC Dogmatic on their joint album Promatic. Here Proof explores the psychedelic side of drug culture that would fuel much of his more experimental work.

Proof “Derty Promo” (2002) From Electric Cool-Aid Acid Testing EP
In one of his best solo tracks, Proof cleverly lets listeners in on his accomplishments by denying them: “I ain’t start D12, I never rocked mics/I ain’t never been an Unsigned Hype in my life/I ain’t got a deal, I never scrap in clubs/I never be seen with a pack of thugs.”

Proof “My Life” (2003) From D-12’s Online Limited Edition Mixtape
Dirty Harry deftly recounts his early childhood and family life in this head-nodder.

D12 “The Good Die Young” (2004) From D12 World
The group’s tribute to late member Bugz.

    Proof “E And 1 Equal None (E.S.H.A.M.)” (2004) From I Miss The Hip-Hop Shop
On his rare first solo album, Proof sent this diss at Detroit “acid rap” pioneer Esham, to whom he says “Every Sucka Has A Moment.”

Proof feat. Swifty “What People Do For Money” (2004) From DJ Exclusive Presents Luthaism
Never afraid to pick up his man’s beef, Proof throws his hat in the ring in this diss song to Benzino and Dave Mays.

Proof feat. Eminem “We Ain’t Scared” (2004) Unreleased
“I’m up in Hollis spendin’ dollars ain’t feelin’ no pressure,” says Proof on this diss track to Ja Rule.

Proof “Can’t Have A Moments Peace” (2005) From Grown Man Shit Mixtape
Proof goes after veteran Detroit MC Champtown in perhaps his most scathing diss track.

Proof feat. “Gurls Wit Da Boom” (2005) From Searching For Jerry Garcia
Proof took it to the clubs in the first single from his second solo album.

Proof “Kurt Kobain” (2005) From Searching For Jerry Garcia
Proof makes amends for his life’s regrets on one of his most eerily introspective songs.

Proof feat. Ameer “Comin’ Up With Lent” (2006) From Hand 2 Hand Mixtape
When he died, Proof was preparing this new mixtape that showcased a slew of new talent along with his own Iron Fist Entertainment.

Interesting article (some audio snippets are avaible on the original page), even if there are some mistakes (I MISS THE HIP HOP SHOP is not an album ; WE AIN'T SCARED has been renamed OIL CAN HARRY and is part of the GROWN MAN SHIT MIXTAPE), but it's a good selection, I think. Sorry if it has already been post.

Is 'I Miss The hip Hop Shop' not an album?

A lot of good songs there. I would have had 'Clap wit me', 'High Rollers', 'Forgive Me' & 72nd and Central on there.

Jus Rhymin with Proof is when I first really took notice of the extent of Proof's talent, he was better than Em on that freestylin session and there was one rhyme he spit which left me thinkin 'whoa'.

Peeps can buy 'I Miss The Hip Hop Shop' here:
                  http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...9891006http://

Proof was unsigned hype in the source years ago.
