Slum Village and Young RJ Return To The "Dirty District," Pay Homage to J Dilla
by James Bartlett
Slum Village and the late Proof are among the Detroit MCs featured on Barak Records' Dirty District Vol. 3, due this June.
The latest edition of the Dirty District series was produced entirely by an up-and-coming Detroit star Young RJ, and also features SlumVillage's Baatin, Planet Asia and Dwele, among others. The compilation also features an unreleased J Dilla "Special Slum Village Mix."
The 22-year-old RJ has produced tracks on Slum Village's Detroit Deli, and their latest album Self Titled, and even contributed to the groups Trinity LP while still in high school.
"Looking back on it now, there was pressure, but it was not overwhelming," Young RJ said when asked about how he handles the responsibility of succeeding a legendary producer like Dilla. "I think being so young helped me a great deal, I was just able to focus on making good music and Jay Dee taught me certain things that I used, which just added to what I already brought to the table. I'm young, but I have an old soul and my production has a younger edge to it to where I feel I am able to reach the younger and older fans."
Dirty District Vol. 3 is due in stores on June 6.
