Chattanooga police have charged an 11-year-old girl with aggravated assault and rape of a 14-month-old girl left unsupervised in her care.
Statements obtained from the girl and other witnesses indicate the girl caused severe vaginal trauma to the toddler Wednesday.
Authorities said the abuse occurred after the toddler's mother dropped her off at her sister's apartment where the 11-year-old and at least two other children were being cared for.
Police believe the abuse occurred during a 30-minute period while the sister was away.
Police say witnesses told them the 11-year-old took the toddler into a bathroom, shut the door and then they heard the baby screaming.
Later when the mother came to pick up the child, she saw blood inside the child's diaper.
The baby was taken to the hospital for surgeries. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The 11-year-old was taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center. Police said they have not yet determined whether any of the adults involved would be charged.
