Citizen Takedown Sends Would-Be Robber To Hospital
    Sunday June 15, 2008
    CityNews.ca Staff

A would-be robber is in hospital after his intended target fought back - with reinforcements.

ETF officers swarmed an address on Cedar Drive near Markham and Eglinton Saturday after receiving a call that a man had been shot. When police arrived, they were greeted with an all out brawl.

The victim - if you can call him that - managed to disarm the suspect with the help of his friends, and then held him until police arrived.

"We have one person taken to hospital. The actual person that was hospitalized was the suspect in this matter. He was overcome and overpowered by the victims and a group of friends," confirmed Sgt Tim Bates of Toronto Police.

"The victim did suffer a grazing [gunshot] wound but he will be OK," he added.

On Sunday, the individual who took justice into his own hands spoke to CityNews.

"I don't regret my decision, but now I have to worry who's going to come back," said the man, whose identity we're protecting. "Now I fear for my life because I was involved with it."

Though officers have many witnesses, they're looking for more. The suspect has since been identified as a young offender.

Call 43 Division at 416-808-4300 if you saw anything or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
