  • 2/12/10 Georgian Luger dies in practise run

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili died following a crash at the Whistler Sliding Centre on Friday, according to AFP.

German IOC official Thomas Bach told the news agency the 21-year-old died following a crash during a pre-Olympic training run at Whistler.

"It is a tragedy for his family and the team," said Bach, the IOC vice-president. "It casts a shadow over the opening ceremony."

Kumaritashvili was hurled off the track and knocked unconscious during his second of two runs on Friday.

He was clocked at 144.3 km/h before he hit one side of the wall, crashed into the other, and was thrown off his sled and over the wall. He appeared to hit a metal pole on the side of the track.

The crash occurred on the outrun of a turn named Thunderbird.

Track medical staff immediately rushed to the scene and administered CPR.

B.C. Ambulance Services responded to a call at the Whistler Sliding Centre at 10:50 a.m., Friday.

A patient was taken to the Poly Centre Clinic in Whistler to be treated for a serious injury, Kristy Hellen, a spokesperson with B.C. ambulance service said. The patient remains at the Poly Centre at noon, Hellen said. A helicopter evacuation to Vancouver was not involved in the treatment, she said.

"I've never seen anything like that," said four-time Olympian Shiva Keshavan, of India. "I'm afraid it's bad."

Kumaritashvili is ranked No. 44 in the world.

Training was delayed after the accident and race officials say there will be a hold on the track until further notice.

Earlier Friday, reigning Olympic luge gold medallist Armin Zöggeler of Italy managed to walk away after crashing in his first run, but came back to complete a clean second run.

The two time Olympic champion and four-time medallist lost control in the lower section of his opening run, tearing down the track while holding on to his sled before coming to a halt. He stood up almost immediately after the crash.

Zöggeler was driven off in a medical vehicle, but returned for his second run.

There have been more than a dozen crashes during Olympic training. A Romanian woman was briefly knocked unconscious earlier this week.

"I think they are pushing it a little too much,'' Australia's Hannah Campbell-Pegg said Thursday after she nearly lost control in training. "To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we're crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives.''

lots of talk about whether or not there should have been poles there, the guy was going way too fast and lost control. He probably would have died regardless at the speed he was going at

they should definitely add some safety precautions there... not just some concrete poles.

nah he wasnt decapitated, but the positive thing is he would have died instantly, they are just doing their due diligance....when you watch the vid in hd u clearly see his neck snap on impact of the pole....

all the luge experts are saying this track is the fastest and most technical track in the history of the sport. as well that a luge track is engineered to keep the body inside the track, never do they see a body exit the track, only the sled. so it goes to show this guy was going way too fast and was too inexperienced to handle those speeds...

That's some nasty shit. Dude 22 yeas old never had a chance. The shocking thing is is they will run on that same track tomorrow morning in the Olympics.

That's crazy, they better come up with a safety precaution like netting to prevent that from happening again.

netting wouldnt stop somethign at 145km/hr

however, a luge track is suppose to be engineered to keep the body inside the track regardless....who knows!
