    Climber hacks off his arm

    Pinned 5 days by rock

    By CORKY SIEMASZKO
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Pinned for five days to a canyon ledge by a gigantic boulder and out of drinking water, a 27-year-old Colorado climber faced a stark choice - lose part of his right arm or die.
Aron Ralston reached for his pocketknife.

After sawing off his arm just below the elbow, he somehow found the strength to rig a rope and lower himself 75 feet to the Utah canyon floor, authorities said yesterday.

Ralston then hiked down a riverbed - where he was found late Thursday by hikers who helped him alert deputies searching for him from the sky.

"He's as tough as heck," said Sgt. Mitch Vetere of the Emery County (Utah) sheriff's office. "I don't know where he found the strength to do what he did and survive."

Ralston was in serious condition last night. Rescuers were unable to retrieve the right arm he left behind in the canyon.

"He was able to rationally consider alternatives relative to his situation," his mother, Donna Ralston, said in a statement. "His spirits are high, and he anxiously looks forward to returning to his love of the outdoors."

Ralston, a photographer who lives in Aspen, Colo., supports his climbing addiction - he has scaled 49 of Colorado's highest peaks - by working at a sporting goods store.

He barely escaped being killed in February, when an avalanche thundered over him. He told pals he was a lucky man.

Last Saturday, Ralston was climbing in remote Blue John Canyon in southeastern Utah. A boulder weighing 800 to 1,000 pounds crashed down on him after he pushed his arm into a crack in the canyon wall and the boulder shifted.

Unable to free himself, Ralston rationed his water and hoped somebody would find him.

"He was wearing shorts and a shirt, so by day he was fine because the temperature was in the 70s," Vetere said. "At night it was close to freezing. He had to be cold."

By Tuesday, Ralston had run out of water.

By Thursday, he had run out of hope - even though authorities began looking for him Tuesday after friends called police when he missed work. "He had a lot of time to think, and options were awful limited," Vetere said.

Ralston told rescuers he tied a tourniquet above his right bicep before he began slicing through his own flesh.

"I never actually saw the knife, but I have no doubt he could cut right through the arm with a saw blade if he had the courage to do it," Vetere said.

Jay Lieberman, a professor of orthopedic surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, agreed.

"My guess is that bones were crushed, so he only had to cut through soft tissue," he said. "But he still had to cut through nerves and blood vessels. And there probably was a lot of pain."

Terry Mercer, who piloted the rescue helicopter to a hospital in Moab, Utah, said Ralston "walked himself into the emergency room." Park ranger Steven Swanke, who was with Ralston at the hospital, said he was in awe of the climber. "I've never seen anybody who has the will to live and is as much of a warrior as Aron is ."
