R I P P E R ' S N O T E S .. JO! NEW USHER *HYPE* HYPE* There's a lot of early buzz surrounding Usher's fourth album, Confessions. Everybody's wondering: Will he push the envelope? Can he top his last albums, given the fact that his 1997 release My Way and his 2001 CD 8701 sold a combined 8 million units." Though Usher himself was not in the house for a special listening session of Confessions , the set's executive producer, Mark Pitts, was obviously excited about the project, as he hosted the early February event at Arista's New York offices. "This is the Usher you've been waiting for," Pitts said. "He's all grown up and you can hear it in his vocals and in the types of songs on this album." Pitts turned up the surround-sound system volume, and the conference room table literally bounced as he played the first track, "Yeah," featuring Lil' Jon and Ludacris. The bumping club joint is already at radio stations, and a video will be out soon, we were told. While Usher's image has been of the sexy young man you'd take home to your mom, then sneak in the house when mom wasn't home, his music has always leaned toward the safe side. Confessions is definitely Usher's departure from that squeaky-clean image. He gets most personal on the title track, "Confessions II," where he cites his own infidelity and an unplanned pregnancy. "Now this is going to be the hardest thing I think I ever had to do/Got me talking to myself asking how am I going to tell you/'Bout the call I got from the girl that I was creepin' with/Says she's three months pregnant and she's keepin' it." Word is that the first part of this song, "Confessions I," will be released after the album drops via DVD or Internet. "Burn," produced by Jermaine Dupri and Brian Michael Cox, is the signature ballad of the album. Usher croons as he explains to his woman that, although he loves her, it may be time for them to go their separate ways. There's no mincing of words on "Do It To Me." Produced by Jermaine Dupri and Brian Michael Cox, the track is reminiscent of Prince's "The Beautiful Ones." "I'm tired of thinking about it/Speaking about it/Baby it's time to be about it/Turn off the lights, take off your clothes/Jump in the bed and let it flow/The squeezing, holding, biting, scratching, spanking, screaming." The Neptunes stepped in to produce the sugary-sweet "Sweet Lies," the first song recorded for Confessions.
