    Spain 'to withdraw Iraq troops'

Spain has more than 1,300 troops in Iraq
Spain's Socialist Party prime minister-elect has confirmed his intention to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq.
Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said: "The war in Iraq was a disaster, the occupation of Iraq is a disaster."

The Socialist Party won a shock poll victory after voters appeared to turn on the government over its handling of the Madrid bombings.

Spain, with more than 1,300 troops in Iraq, supported the US-led war on Iraq despite much domestic opposition.

Mr Zapatero told Spanish radio that no decision would be taken until he was in power or without wide political consultation.

    Provisional Spanish election results
    Socialists (PSOE): 42%
    Popular Party (PP): 38%
    Catalan Regional Party (CiU): 3%
Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC): 2.5%
    United Left (IU): 5%
    Turnout: 77%

But the soldiers would be pulled out if there was no change in Iraq by the 30 June deadline for transfer of sovereignty.

"Wars such as those which have occurred in Iraq only allow hatred, violence and terror to proliferate," Mr Zapatero said.

Our world affairs correspondent, Paul Reynolds, says that the situation in Iraq may well have changed by 30 June, but whether that influences the new government remains to be seen.

By then the US and UK hope that the Security Council will have given UN approval to the handover plan.

In addition the interim Iraqi government will be asking foreign troops to stay as part of a UN-approved multinational force.

i hope usa is next to change their government and policy!

yea, this is the most rushed, uninformed coup de ta i have ever seen. this socialist was elected within a week of the worst terrorist attack that country has ever seen. the incumbent was in a solid lead, and all of the sudden the people's views drastically change within a week and they make a life altering decision as a knee jerk reaction

honestly this is the strangest thing i have seen in a while, i would not rule out the possibility of this socialist having a hand in the terrorist attack to get elected to office

and you obviosly don't understand what is going on in Iraq right now, if the US left, there would be absolute and complete anarchy, contrary to popular belief, the reason iraq is not stable right now, is not because of attacks on US and US supporters, it is infighting and massive street crime, murderers are running wildin the streets since sadaam set them free, the US troops are the only law inforcement officers present in iraq, so yea, get those troops out, so they can all kill each other!! yippee!!

god some people are just fucking uninformed, when denmark gets bombed, then you can talk about this, you have no idea what it is like to live in fear of another attack, that could whipe out everyone you know and love, every day

yes, and it is true, that the US sparked the anarchy, but we are the only ones that can do anything about it now, you can debate the merrit of the war if you want, but we are in now, and we would be much bigger assholes if we left, than if we stay

i never said the us soldiers should leave now..they cant..thats obvious, they should never have gone there. they started the war so now they should clean the mess up which they obviousely are not capable of. and the spain elections..no wonder if the government lies to the public they gonna vote against them (it was the most ridiculous thing of the spanish government to accuse eta after some minutes the bombing happened). us government has lied too much past 4 years. i think its stupid to vote liars. fear of another attack? when has iraq attacked the usa? lol..saddam had nothing to do with 9/11!! nothing at all..saddam and bin laden hate each other, thats fact!

Oh, so now you are good buddies with bin Laden and Hussain.....? Saddam financially supported bin laden for years, and when it comes to 911 saddam was the biggest supporter, THATS FACTS....you dont even rate to discuss these kinds of things, and what do you mean we are not capable of cleaning up the mess, once again, YOU DON'T know what you are talking about..... we didn't start the war, Saddam started the war, we didn't go to war with the people of Iraq, we went to war with saddam, why do you think so many people surrendered to the U.S., because they didn't want to fight for the man anymore, they were ready to see him go.... We are welcomed by most Iraqis, only few supported Saddam, and by you saying that we shouldn't have went over to Iraq, you are clearly suppoting him as well.....you know nothing about this so dont even post anything about this anymore, and before you start shooting off little comments degrading my country make sure you know the facts first, basicallly that means dont even talk about it anymore because there is no way you can ever know the facts, ecspecially since you arent even an American, but mainly because you were never there and never seen what was really going on.....

U.S. wouldn't leave if those terrorists started to bomb american trains...that would probably give Bush more reason to stay, if anything...
