With a new focus and a star-studded LP to boast, Jadakiss is poised to reach the mainstream visibility that eluded him with his solo debut two years ago. As Kiss Of Death prepares to go full swing, Kiss spoke to SOHH.com about getting props, label support and Ma$e's return.
While The Lox are universally known as one of Hip-Hop's hardest groups, Kiss spent a lot of time courting the ladies on his freshman effort. For his sophomore LP, heads can expect Jada to switch it up as he gives listeners more insight into the man outside of the booth.
"It's more personal. It's a little more of my life, more grown up," Jadakiss told SOHH.com regarding the direction of his new album. "Other than my life there's just not no bullsh!t on it, just a lot of heartfelt songs."
Since his entrance back in 96, Jada has joined the ranks of highly imitated artists like Biggie Smalls, Tupac Shakur and Jay-Z as one of hip-hop's premier wordsmiths. Yet he somehow still feels underrated.
"I take it as a plus. When I hear somebody with one of my cadences, it makes me feel like a pioneer. Even though sometimes I feel I don't get the proper acknowledgment. I'm talking about as far as the masses are concerned," Jada revealed via phone. "I got my confidence from Big, Jay, Nas, Rakim, Rae. They all told me I was nice. They put me on a pedestal. Once I was able to go to all the cats that I considered nice and they told me how they felt about me...it made me who I am."
Over the years, labels have made it a habit to clone the hot product of the moment. With 50 Cent commercializing thug life like never before and endorsing The Lox as the hardest outfit in the game, many think the Yonkers trio is poised to raise its stock. However, Kiss begs to differ.
"The blueprint that [50 Cent] laid might work, but for the most part it's not going to happen. You can't really go on that because the game switches so quick like every few months. I think it's about timing and you always need the machine behind you," Kiss offered. "Interscope is really behind me this time. The last time they were not behind me at all. It was 5% as opposed to like 98% this time."
It has now been over 4 years since The Lox left P. Diddy's Bad Boy Records. And now his former label mate, Ma$e is attempting the same feat as the minister makes plans to rejoin the rap world.
"[Ma$e] actually called me before he went to see Nelly and all of them. I came in the game with Ma$e. I know him, probably even better than Puff," Kiss revealed. "I spoke to him several times and the last time it really felt like he was trying to make an effort to come back into the music. I don't know how it's going to go though. It's a lot of politics."
Kiss Of Death, featuring production from The Neptunes, Swizz Beatz, Dr. Dre, Scott Storch and Havoc along with guest appearances from Kanye West, Eminem, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg and Anthony Hamilton hits stores in June.
