Update: D12 Booted From Warped Tour After Assault

Chart-topping rap outfit D12 has been thrown off the Warped Tour after a brutal assault on Detroit rap rivals Esham and T.N.T. The incident occurred last Friday during a tour stop in Camden, N.J., leaving T.N.T. with bruises and cuts, and Esham with a broken nose, a ruptured eyeball, a concussion, and hearing damage to his left eardrum. Esham, T.N.T., and Mastamind, who perform under the name Natas, have also been ejected from the tour, which D12 had joined just three days before the incident.

Speaking from the Detroit office of his label, Overcore Records, Esham tells Billboard.com that a mob of some 40 of D12 friends and associates jumped off the group's tour bus and began the backstage attack, kicking he and T.N.T. in the head and pelting them with rocks. Esham lays the blame directly at the hands of Eminem (real name: Marshall Mathers), who is a member of D12 but was not a part of the tour or the incident.

No charges or arrests have been filed at deadline, but an Overcore spokesperson says lawyers are in contact with the Camden police department.

"Mathers gave the word," Esham alleges. "He didn't even show up for the tour. That's how premeditated this was. This was a straight up attempted murder on my life. I could have been dead." Concerned at the size of D12's entourage, Esham says he began filming the group with his video camera just minutes before the attack, and hopes the footage can be used to identify individual attackers in court.

The incident is apparently the culmination in an ongoing war of words between the Esham and Eminem camps, waged on Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" and Esham's "Tongues" album.

"It got this bad because those guys idolize us," Esham says of Eminem and D12. "They emulate everything we do. Eminem has animosity toward us because we're his favorite rap group. We don't agree with some of the things they say, so we speak upon that. It stems from that. I don't know what country they think we live in, but you can't just go around doing this sh*t."

Esham is equally stunned that he was kicked off the tour for doing nothing more than defending himself. "We got kicked off for defending ourselves, which is totally horrendous," he says. "[D12] was 100% in the wrong. Even now they're sending E-mails and death threats to us."

In a statement, D12 said, "On Friday Aug. 3, an incident occurred backstage at the Warped Tour, spurred by D12's concern for the safety of their guests. Both D12 and the other party involved have been asked to leave the tour. Eminem was home in Detroit and not on tour with D12 when the incident took place."

A D12 spokesperson says the group hopes to return to the road as soon as possible. D12's Shady/Interscope album "Devil's Night" is No. 3 on The Billboard 200 in its sixth week on the chart.

The spokesperson also refutes Esham's claim that Eminem purposefully avoided the tour, noting that the rapper had planned to make a surprise appearance

That is good reason for Em to not be on the tour tho, think about it. Normally if your group is touring you would deffinately be down and there right. But then one of your rivals is at the tour and theres gonna be a fight at one point cuz its inevitable. If Eminem were to get into this he woulda been locked away for awhile cuz he already fucked up for doin stupid shit I mean pullin out an unloadin gat yellin for help and droppin it.

Here is a story from mtv.com:

D12, Esham Evicted From Warped After Backstage Fight
                08.06.2001 8:07 PM EDT

When the Vans Warped Tour hit Camden, New Jersey, on Friday, a longstanding Detroit rap rivalry reared up and got its participants, D12 and Esham, evicted from the lineup.

A fight erupted backstage at the Tweeter Center at the Waterfront between Natas affiliates Esham and T.N.T. and Eminem protégés D12, just three days after Em's crew joined the punk/extreme-sports outing. Warped Tour organizers wouldn't discuss the flap's details and only confirmed that both parties involved were immediately asked to leave the tour.

"Personal issues were brought into the tour, and we felt they weren't conducive to the Warped environment and everyone's good time," Warped executive producer Kevin Lyman said.

Spokespeople for Interscope Records, D12's label, also didn't disclose specifics regarding the incident. They did, however, issue a statement confirming the group's departure from the tour.

"On Friday, August 3, 2001, an incident occurred backstage at the Warped Tour, spurred by D12's concern for the safety of their guests," the statement read. "As a result, both D12 and the other party involved have been asked to leave the tour."

A publicist for Esham, however, provided a detailed account of the backstage incident. Esham, a pioneer of Detroit's acid-rap/horrorcore scene, claims D12 and their posse, which numbered between 30 and 40 people, jumped him and T.N.T. Esham suffered a broken nose, ruptured eyeball, mild concussion and a loss of hearing in his left ear as a result of the fight and was taken to Virtua West Jersey Hospital in Camden, according to his publicist. Esham is now recovering in Detroit.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed the rapper's admittance Friday night, but his discharge report cited only scrapes and contusions bruises as his injuries.

While at the hospital, Esham filed a police report against his attackers, according to an Overcore Records press release. However, a spokesperson for the Camden Police Department couldn't confirm the report's existence since the records office was closed at press time.

T.N.T. escaped the entanglement with minor cuts and bruises, the publicist said.

"It's a sad state of affairs when someone like D12 or Eminem, who make their careers verbally assaulting people, resort to violence when someone talks a little trash about them," said Scott Santos, president and CEO of Esham's label, Overcore Records. "We are very concerned about Esham's injuries, with the possible neurological damage and hearing loss sustained during the attack, and the effect it may have on his career."

Interscope spokespeople maintain Eminem was in Detroit at the time of the incident.

An early public display of the two camps' feud occurred during a 1997 D12/Lil' Kim concert, when D12's Proof called Esham to the stage, according to Esham's publicist. Esham took Proof up on the challenge and proceeded to rally the crowd in his support, when members of D12's entourage attacked him.

Esham added more fuel to the fire with a verse of "All Night Every Day," from the rapper's latest album, Tongues: "The styles that you runnin' 'round with is ours. You and them Shady suckers is nothin' but cowards. Bang your brains in the dirt, make you go berserk. If you rap with Emily (Eminem), your ass gonna get murked."

D12's debut album, Devils Night, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in late June, and now stands at #3 with nearly 1.2 million copies sold, according to SoundScan.

i wouldnt go and believe anything esham says without some type of proof (no pun intended). d12 has dont tons of shows in detroit without eminem. and now that eminem is working on a movie and a new album do you think he has time to go on a nationwide tour?

Could someone explain this to me please. First eshams publicist says he had all those bad injuries. So why did the hospital discharge him. Then esham should be use to handling people jumping him. Wasn't he the one who said he fought all those people on that stage? Then everyone is being silent about the situation --- everyone except esham's publicist. If this is going to be a court battle why is he so eager to talk to the press? That's just killing his case. And why does esham have eminem on the brain? He can't stop mentioning eminem. It's like he has a script or something. I really think he will milk this situation to death because as long as this situation is media bait he will get the fame he wants. I do think esham and d12 could have handled that situation better instead of resulting to violence. That never solves anything. To much pride roaming around.
