  • If Eminem died after TES/8 Mile, would he have gone down as the greatest rapper ever?

I've often thought about how death elevates art and separates it from mundane reality. Our most revered artists, poets, writers, and the like are dead. Once factors such as current events and human potential are removed, art is left to stand alone. It is at this point that we can most objectively view and enjoy it.

It is the isolation of art--a captured moment in time--that is so pure.

Anyway, in terms of rap, Biggie and Pac are routinely cited as two of the greatest artists of all time, and there is little doubt in my mind that their premature deaths had something to do with this.

We will never hear "new" material from dead rappers that could taint out appreciation of them. We will never hear their Encores. Their work stands alone and has been elevated to a level above the living, above the fallible.

If Eminem had died at the peak of his success and at a time when it seemed he could do no wrong (after TES/8 Mile), would that have changed our opinion of him now?

Does it make Eminem a worse artist overall that he released material paling in comparison to his previous work? Is there something more pure and amazing in three classic albums rather than three classic albums and two weak ones?

Objectively speaking, I tell myself that three 10s and two 7s is greater or at the least equal to three 10s alone, but somewhere inside me the "stench" of the 7s rubs off on the 10s and taints their value.

I think it's an interesting topic, and I can't help but feel that I would be biased into calling Eminem the "greatest ever" had he died, yet today I consider him more as a former great. What are your thoughts?

In white America's eyes, yes absolutely.

Are you saying Encore and Relapse are 7/10s? If so you're nuts man, Encore is a 4 or 5 on a good day and Relapse is a 1 or 2.

I hoped people wouldn't latch onto this--I meant that only for the sake of brevity and comparison. I didn't mean to start a ratings thread or rate the albums at all.

Not without a doubt, but he'd been added to the conversation that was still prevlant at the time... Who's the best rapper ever? Biggie or Pac?

Well, if he dropped TES second and then MMLP, he'd be a considerable candidate from a commercial standpoint. But people like Core, WPG, DreftSnoop, and those other guys that think Slug and Lupe and Madvillainy and MF Doom are the second coming, SSLP wouldn't even convince them that he's "AT LEAST" a decent rapper. *Sighs* I hate that this is the way of the condescending world. I just can't get into De La Souls and Immortal Techniques. Just Shoot Me.

^Don't worry Immortal Technique fucking sucks. De La Soul is the shit though, do better.

Eminem would undoubtedly be seen as the g.o.a.t. if he died at that point. Good thing he stuck around to show us how shitty he is.

I like Buddy and Me, Myself, and I and Feel Good and Scenario and Baby Phat and all that good shit. I can actually get into De La Soul more so than Immortal Technique. The only guy who raps off-beat that I can stand is RZA and that's barely. ITT Tech is just fucking boresome. Iz dat uh wurd? Ah dizz-ont no.
