lyrics. good lyrics can make a song with bad beats and chorus still pretty cool.

Lyrics and beat is a tie for me......either of those can draw me into listening to a song even if the other is nearly non-existent. And for me to consider a song to be anything better than "good" it must have both these elements.

        ^I disagree (to Super)

I think it goes flow then lyrics then beat. That's why I cant stand Immortal Technique, because I think his flow is horrible. He's a great lyricist, but he should ghostwrite or something.

Flow doesn't make a great MC though, because some of the best flowers are not great lyricists, so that's where it mixes together. I think it's important to have a strong flow and strong lyrics. Beats I can deal with just because that's not really something that an MC can control, but flow and lyrics are. If you're flowing off beat, then i lose interest real quick. If you have a tight flow but say nothing, I lose interest real quick. So a good mixture of lyrics and flow are important, but I guess flow comes first because if I dont hear a tight flow, I won't listen.

I think for a song it should go Lyrics/Flow and Voice/ Beat then Hook. But this is purely a matter of opinion. I mean, if you are looking for songs just to have at a party or something the criteria changes, but personally, this is what i look for in songs.

You're not a rapper if you don't have any flows. You're not a tight emcee if you don't come up with tight lyrics.

However, it actually depends on the situation for what I prefer. There are different types of rap songs. There are songs simply made to impress people with the beat and chorus, so people should take 'em for what they're worth.

                      Peace.

obviously to be a successful rapper you must have a alright beat, good lyrics and tight flow. But to me the Lyrics matter the most.

I agree. Now I'm a big 50 Cent critic, but even I can admit that 50 has incredible flow. He is by no means a spectacular lyricist, far from it. But, I still get lured into listening to him because even though his lyrics arent that nice, his flow is real nice. So I gotta say flow is most important to me.
Next is lyrics, ofcourse. Then beat. Then chorus. I could easily listen to freeverses by artists if they had the previous 3 aspects down. Eminem's "Rabbit Run" comes to mind. Don't ask me why. That is freeverse, but he has great flow, nice lyrics, and an above average instrumental.
