  • [LINK] Haiku d'Etat - Coup de Theatre (2004) DOPE!!!

    Artist: Haiku d'Etat
    Album: Coup de Theatre
    Release Date: October 26, 2004
    Record Label: Decon Inc.

    Review (Splendid Magazine):

Haiku D'Etat offer one of the most vital hip-hop albums you'll hear this year, pairing old school rhymes with a new school sensibility. Equal parts street poetry, cool jazz and tongue-twisting freestyle, Coup De Theatre should be mandatory listening for anyone who spins Blackalicious, The Dilated Peoples or the Jurassic 5. This is smart rap that doesn't preach, boast or belittle, but it definitely makes you think while you're shaking your ass.

Haiku D'Etat consists of three California-based MCs: Aceyalone and Mikah 9 of Freestyle Fellowship fame, and Abstract Tribe Unique frontman Abstract Rude. For the uninitiated, all you need to know is that these three gents know their way around a microphone, providing the antithesis of the monosyllabic screed popularized by 50 Cent and his contemporaries; you need to provide dictionaries on the dancefloor for this kind of rhyme. And instead of lyrical nihilism, Haiku D'Etat impart even-handed wisdom and positive reinforcement of a secular nature. Nimble lyrics that leave little room for silence, much less for breath, turn stunning compositions like "Kats" or "Poetry Takeover" into material that would leave the Digable Planets or cLOUDDEAD gasping for air. "Transitions & Eras" packs all the swinger slick of Gang Starr, without the violent overtones (and features a classy guest spot by Busdriver, to boot). "All Good Things" is an easygoing groove that turns an objective eye on the good and the bad of a relationship; it's ended in a fashion that would make Pete Rock and CL Smooth proud.

While Coup De Theatre's emphasis is clearly on the lyricists' strengths -- and who can blame them? -- the backing beats are equally inventive, and commendable for their ability to propel each track, giving them fully developed personality without overpowering the centerpiece vocals. On "Dogs", for example, the barking of said canines is effected through phantom vinyl scratching, and "Poetry Takeover"'s semi-orchestral yet minimalist motif conveys a sense of spectacle that seems entirely appropriate, avoiding camp or irony. However, when the titular trio turns the screws on the mind-blowing "Top Qualified", and guests Lyrics Born, Lateef and (especially) Blackalicious almost burn through your speakers with their blinding speed, it's time to recognize Coup De Theatre as one of the best lyrical documents of the year, if not the ages.

      Thanks

...by the way, can people start making the spaces in their links bigger and more apparent? Sometimes after "Copy & Pasting" a link, I have to spend ten minutes staring at it, trying to work out where all the tiny spaces are...
