Try taking a listen to Van Hunt's self-titled debut album. He's one of my favourite musicians of the moment: an exceptional songwriter with a distinctive smooth voice, who makes fantastically varied music with a lot of style and character. His influences are all apparent, the work of various soul/funk greats shining through in his compositions. If you're a fan of soul music at all, you'll almost-certainly like the album.
